The May issue of Powhatan Living featured May Memorial members Irvin and Carol Williams with a wonderful tribute to the life they live and share together. In a recent testimony at May Memorial, Irvin said that there is one word to describe his story: blessed. And reading the piece in Powhatan Living one can see this theme again and again in Carol and Irvin’s relationship and life.

Carol and Irvin first “met” in the infant nursery at Branch’s Baptist Church, and they have literally known each other their entire lives. Both Irvin and Carol are career educators, but they are known and beloved to May Memorial and our Powhatan community for many other reasons. Both Carol and Irvin have lived lives committed to their relationship with Jesus and His Church, first at Branch’s Baptist and then at May Memorial.

Carol has served in many ways, including pianist, church clerk, church leadership counsel, and she also served on the last Pastor Selection Committee. Irvin has taught Sunday School for many years in the Koinonia Sunday School Class, and served for many years on the Personnel Committee, a committee he also served as chair. Both Carol and Irvin have often sang in the May Memorial “summer choir,” and they also, in many “unofficial” ways, have encouraged youth in our church to work hard, give of themselves, and never settle for less than what they can achieve in life. Both Carol and Irvin are examples of grace-filled lives.

This year May Memorial Member, Paula Duncan, was named Powhatan and Virginia’s Region One teacher of the year. Paula began teaching at Powhatan High School in 1999, and over the past twenty-seven years she has enabled her students to grow into life-long learners who better understand their community and world. She models for her students a love for learning and allowing knowledge to affect how one interacts with their community and world.

Paula is a Social Studies teacher at Powhatan High School, and one of the classes for which she has become known is Advanced Placement Human Geography. It is a class in which students receive college credit, and in it they learn how humans understand, use, and change the places in the world they inhabit. This is a class that helps students build the skills they will need in college, thinking critically and processing complicated data.

Region One is large and includes Henrico, Chesterfield, Richmond, and twelve other divisions in central Virginia. Being chosen as teacher of the year for this region is a tremendous accomplishment and is a testament to Paula’s exemplary work in eduction.

Paula is a beloved member of May Memorial, and she has served in many different ways in our church. She exhibits grace, mercy, and strength as a disciple of Jesus. Many of our members heard her give a testimony this Spring in which she spoke of God’s guidance and presence in her life with her battle with cancer that she fought with steadfast resilience, upheld by God’s presence and a community that loves her.
