In Catholic tradition, Mondays are traditionally dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
The Church has long encouraged Catholics to offer prayers, sacrifices, and Mass intentions on Mondays for the faithful departed, especially for those who may have no one remembering them in prayer. This tradition reflects the Church’s belief in the Communion of Saints and the value of intercessory prayer for souls undergoing purification as they journey toward Heaven.
Common Monday devotions include:
➞ Prayers for the dead
➞ Offering Mass intentions for the Holy Souls
➞ The Holy Rosary offered for the Holy Souls, especially the Sorrowful Mysteries
➞ The Chaplet of the Holy Souls or short ejaculatory prayers such as:
“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord...”
➞ The De Profundis (Psalm 130)
➞ The Prayer of St. Gertrude, traditionally believed to bring relief to many souls
➞ Reading or meditating on the Passion of Christ and offering it for the departed
➞ Offering one’s daily sufferings, inconveniences, or sacrifices for their relief
➞ Fasting or abstinence intentionally offered for the Holy Souls
➞ Acts of charity and works of mercy offered for their relief
➞ Almsgiving in their name, such as donations made for the departed
➞ Offering indulgenced works with the intention of applying them to the Holy Souls
➞ Visiting a cemetery, especially when accompanied by prayer, when possible
➞ Lighting a candle as a sign of prayer and remembrance for the departed
This devotion also serves as a reminder to live in a state of grace and to practice mercy, knowing we may one day rely on the prayers of others ourselves.
