Reach for the stars is a phrase we all have heard. We don't hear reach for the bottom of the barrel. Why? A brief definition of the bottom of the barrel is, "be reduced to using things or people of the poorest quality because there is nothing else available." Apples at the bottom of the barrel are often bruised or rotten for example. The idea of this article is to get us to see if we are aiming for the bottom or the top.

Our society is running toward the bottom of the barrel. It is
like those in the day of the prophet Isaiah, calling evil good and good evil. "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20)

As society or man in general moves away from God and His Word, it is racing to the bottom. Let us also know that half-hearted service to God, and being indifferent or lukewarm are all signs that one is heading toward the bottom as well.

Paul wrote to the Colossians, "Set your mind on things above not on things of this earth." In other words, we are to aim for the top, reach for the heavens not go downward. Let us make sure we are not heading to the bottom of the barrel! Remember Heaven is at the top, and Hell is at the bottom.

As I was reading I came to the passage where Jesus said “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great.” (Luke 9:47-48)

I started to think about babies cryig, children making noise, at times children getting up and walking around. My question for you is how do you view these sounds?

Are they sounds that bring joy to your ears or sounds that cause you to become upset? I know children need to be taugth to behave but let us keep in mind they are children.

I hear more and more people saying we have no young people at our church. We have no children they will say with sorrow. What they are saying is that the "silence is deafing." They are saying they fear for the future of that church.

If you are at a church filled with children count it as a blessing. Be an encouragment to the young parents, offer a helping hand. Don't be the one who is always telling them what they need to do with those children. Don't be the one who makes a young mom feel they are failing. Be careful not to be the one who discourages them to the point they just stop coming.

Some say silence is golden, I say the lack of noise from children in the assembly is sign we are in trouble.

In our area we have two overpasses that are not very high above the road. There are warning signs about the height. Yet over the years several trailers have been stuck or ripped off the top of their trailer. It has become a big joke around here. I image for the driver it is not to funny.

Is it people don't believe what they read? Could it be they think they are smarter than the people who put up the warning sign? It might be they were distracted or not paying attention. Our highways are filled with warning signs. These warning signs are often ignored and the end result is tragic.

A scripture comes to mind, “The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who watches his way preserves his life.” Pr. 16:17. Another scripture, ‘Let me pass through your land, I will travel only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left." Deut 2:27

God has given us many warnings. Are we reading them? Are we paying attention to them? Do we believe them? Are we obeying them? Jesus taught "Be Alert" Peter told his readers to "be alert" as well. As we travell on the Highway to Heaven let us not be distracted by the things of this world.

Make sure you reach your destination, "HEED GOD'S WARNING SIGNS!" There will be nothig funny if we miss Heaven.

Ever so often we read a story where someone has fallen in a sinkhole or maybe fell in a well. It might be they are trapped in a cave or in a car due to an accident. People rush to their rescue. They work long hours and even days if need be to help them. They don't set around and talk about how stupid they were to get into this situation.

There are times when we will be needed to help a brother or sister in Christ who has fallen into the peril of sin. We should not belittle them nor should we give them a lecture about how stupid they were for getting themselves into the bad situation they are in. They need help and we need to be there for them. Be there as long as we are needed.

We have brothers and sisters that need our love, strength and concern to bring them back to the safety of God and His family. God's Word encourages us to help those that have fallen from the faith. Paul writes, “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:2) Will you be there for the one who needs a helping hand?

I was telling one of the grandchildren they needed to study some. They replied no they had studied enough. I remember thinking the same way, I could not wait to graduate high school, my studying would be over I thought. The idea that one can stop studying may sound good but it is not wise.

I am afraid, this also happens to many Christians as well. At first, most Christians are dedicated to reading and studying God’s word daily. Then something happens to us. We think we know it all. We get so busy we say we don't have time to read and study. It may be we just lose interest. Whatever the reason we need to remember that God wants us to continue to grow spiritually.

The apostle Paul admonished the Colossians to “increase in knowledge” (Colossians 1:9-10), and Peter instructed as well to grow in “grace and knowledge” (2 Peter 2:1-2; 3:18). We cannot be what God wants us to be if we stop reading and studying God's Word. Don't allow yourself to become lazy or indifferent in your study of God's Word.

Recently I saw and heard a person describe their 50 km marathon. They talked about how it was much harder than they thought it would be. They also said they were considering quitting because they knew they would not be able to finish.

Then something happened. Right at the point they were going to stop a person showed up at the water station. A dear family member had come to cheer them on. Just the sight of this unexpected presence was enough for them to say, "I can do it." Then came words of encouragement as well and the racer said their strength and mind were renewed. It still was hard but they finished. They ran the race and received their prize. What if no one had been there for them?

I am reminded that Paul says we are in a race. It is not an easy race. It has its mountains and valleys. There can and will be trouble along the way. This is why we need to train hard for this race. We also need encouragement along the way and we need to be an encouragement to others in this race as well. As we saw the one running the marathon would have quit if someone had not been there for them. Many have quit the race to heaven because no one was there for them.

How is your race going? If you have quit the race get back in the race. If you are discouraged remember why you started the race and seek help from others. If you are running well keep running and be there to help others to continue to run as well.

Easter is over. My question today is, where will be next Sunday? Where will you be every Lord's Day after Easter? Many who identify themselves as Christians will “go to church” on Easter, but will not show up again until Christmas.

The Lord’s kingdom and righteousness should be first (Matt. 6:33) throughout the year. Heb. 10:24-25 with its admonition not to forsake the assembling together was not telling us it’s okay to be sporadic in our attendance as long as we make sure we don’t miss Easter Sunday.

The Lord's Death, burial, and resurrection should be remembered each Lord's Day.

Most of us have sung these words:
Why did my Savior come to earth,
And to the humble go?
Why did He choose a lowly birth?
Because He loved me so!

I am reminded that Jesus loved us:

He even loved us when we didn’t love Him.

He loved us when we were unlovable.

He loved us when we didn’t deserve it.

Even when we were His enemy He loved us.

Do you remember when you loved Jesus?
Till Jesus comes I'll sing His praise,
And then to glory go,
And reign with Him thro' endless days,
Because He loved me so!

Has something happened to that love? God remebered the love israel once had for Him, “This is what the Lord says: “‘I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.”Jer 2:2

Has something caused you to forsake the one who loves you? Is there something you love more than Jesus now? Have you allowed a false teacher, a false promise or something else to allure away from the love of God?

REMEMBER
Why did He drink the bitter cup
Of sorrow, pain and woe?
Why on the cross be lifted up?
Because He loved me so!

He loved me so,
He loved me so;
He gave His precious life for me, for me,
Because, He loved me so.

DO YOU NEED TO REKINDLE THAT LOVE FOR JESUS YOU ONCE HAD?

Are you better at building up or tearing down? It is a lot easier to tear a house down than it is to build a house. The same is true for the church.
It is so easy to tear a church apart but it takes a lot of effort to build the church up.

Criticism is necessary and valid sometimes. However, praise and encouragement are indispensable. We often see parents who criticize their children but never encourage them. They tear them down but they never make any effort to edify them.

Sadly we often see this happening in the church. People tear each other apart but they never put forth the effort to build up one another.

Don't we all want to hear words that are “good for building up? Should we not speak words that are seasoned with salt”? Take note of Proverbs 12:18 "There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword,
But the tongue of the wise promotes health." also consider Pr 15:4 "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit."

Do you like to hear someone say "Thank You"? Don't you like to hear someone say "Good Job"? How does it make you feel when someone says "I appreciate you".

It may take some effort on our part to use words and actions that can build up the church but that effort will be worth it. Let us commit to building up one another instead of tearing one another down.

How many times have you heard someone say, “I think” or “It seems to me?” In many areas of life, these words are okay. However when it comes to what God's Word tells us these words have no place.

Consider the account of Naaman. He was a man with leprosy. He is told to go to the river Jordan and dip seven times and he would be made well. Naamans reaction, "Behold I thought." His way of thinking did not agree with God's way of thinking. the result is Naaman still had his leprosy.

Man still has the same problem as Naaman. They think their way is better than God's way. Man still has not learned when he does something the way he thinks it should be done instead of the way God says for it to be done he is wrong.

In matters where God has spoken and has given divine direction, there is no room for “I think.” The only thing that matters is “Thus saith the Lord”! Peter tells us that when God spoke through the prophets, they “spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit,” without offering their own “private interpretation” (2 Pet. 1:20-21). Peter went on to say, “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God” (1 Pet. 4:11).

Let us remember God's ways and thoughts are the best ways and the only way that leads to salvation. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Is. 55:8-9

Learn from Naaman to start listening to God and do what He says not what we think.
