for National Gun Violence Awareness Day (weekend)- June 5th-7th 🧡

We CAN end gun violence! In 2013 Hadiya Pendleton of Chicago was shot and killed on a playground, just one week after marching in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. Hadiya’s friends far and wide began wearing the color orange to commemorate her life. Orange is the color hunters wears in the woods to protect themselves and others. Hadiya’s senseless death marked the beginning of the “Wear Orange” movement which now coincides with National Gun Violence Awareness Day (weekend), June 5th-7th.

Poughkeepsie Quaker Friends are encouraged to Wear Orange to Meeting for Worship on Sunday June 7th. There are many other ways to get involved with the 2026 Wear Orange activities including a “Roll Call and Remembrance” event at Waryas Park and the Cuomo Bridge Lighting in Nyack. Visit the official Wear Orange website for more details. https://wearorange.org/ways-to-participate/

In 2024, 44,447 people died by fi****ms in the United States. This is an average of one gun-related death every 12 minutes. For several consecutive years, fi****ms have remained the leading cause of death for American children and adolescents. The data is clear, we MUST work to end gun-violence. Whether it be through community interventions, safety laws and policies, or mental health and school support, we can make a real difference. Wear Orange and let it be an inspiration to you to get involved in this important work.

➡️ NYYM calls on Friends to get engaged and take action opposing the 2026 Iran War.

"The New York Yearly Meeting Statement on the War in Iran" was approved in April 2026 Spring Sessions@https://www.nyym.org/session/spring-sessions-2026:

☮️ The New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the association of Friends and Quaker Meetings and Churches in New York and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, joins with people of many faiths and moral conscience in decrying the ongoing and escalating U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, even as we oppose all wars, and the spiraling violence a war sparks. Friends know as a matter of faith, scripture and experience that war does not resolve differences, but rather ignites escalating rounds of violence. War harms and dehumanizes everyone.
We mourn the tragic loss of life. We mourn the financial cost of this war at about $1 billion or more per day, while the U.S. government cuts funding for life-sustaining aid around the world and cuts funding for education, healthcare, food, and other essential needs at home. We are commanded not to be arrogant with our wealth, but to be rich in good deeds and take hold of the life that is truly life. See: 1 Timothy 6:17-19.
We call on our elected officials to take action to stop funding the war, end the fighting, and direct the Administration to respect U.S. and international law, to undertake good-faith diplomatic negotiations to establish an immediate ceasefire and end the war.
We aspire to live in that Spirit that reaches across divides and takes away the occasion for all wars. This war inflicts trauma that will have damaging consequences for generations to come. We must acknowledge the harms and listen with compassion to all those harmed. Only then can we step into the healing that brings about a just world where peace is possible.

Did you know? This meeting house was built specifically for a US president!

Founded in 1930 in Washington, D.C., Friends Meeting of Washington (FMW) was established in part to provide a regular place of worship for President Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, the first Quaker elected President of the United States. They attended the first Meeting for Worship in the new building on January 4, 1931, shortly after its completion.

Herbert Hoover grew up in a Quaker family in Iowa, in the unprogrammed tradition, which he later described as “strong training in patience” that stayed with him throughout his public service career.

Today, FMW remains a vibrant part of the Quaker community in the capital. Multiple meetings for worship are held throughout the week, with three on Sundays. All are welcome!

TWO NEW BOOKS AVAILABLE IN POUGHKEEPSIE FRIENDS’ LIBRARY

* JESUS AND THE DISINHERITED by Howard Thurman

“The landmark work of one of the principal architects of the Civil Right Movement and a key mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King.”

Jesus and the Disinherited is Howard Thurman’s revolutionary return to the story of Jesus an impoverished, heavily persecuted Jew who was poor, disinherited and dispossessed. Thurman
contends that Jesus has always been a partner to the oppressed, even linking his struggles to the enduring discrimination and violence Black American experience.
This edition (2022) of Jesus and the Disinherited is a timeless testimony of faith that demonstrates how to thrive and flourish in a world that attempts to destroy one’s humanity from the inside out. Having witnessed firsthand the depths of white supremacy and the heights of human civility, Thurman reiterates how the gospel may be read as a profound quest for a liberating spirituality and manual of resistance for those ‘who stand with their backs against the wall.’ ” Beacon Press, Boston

• THE FEARLESS BENJAMIN LAY: The Quaker Dwarf Who Became the First Revolutionary Abolitionist
by Marcus Rediker

Renowned historian Marcus Rediker chronicles the transatlantic life and times of a singular man:- Benjamin Lay (1682 - 1759 ) - a Quaker dwarf who demanded the total, unconditional emancipation of all enslaved Africans around the world. Mocked by his contemporaries, Lay was a visionary who practiced the ideals of democracy and equality three hundred years ago. Insisting that human bo***ge violated the principles of Christianity, Lay often performed colorful guerrilla theatre
to shame slave masters. His revolutionary life embodied the proclamation “ no justice, no peace.”

Rediker not only captures Lay’s legacy with passion and historical rigor; he has already helped to change his historical standing with this biography. Since the the publication of The Fearless Benjamin Lay, the Abington Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and the North London Quaker Meeting, two of the communities that disowned Lay in the eighteenth century, have now publicly embraced his spirit, ideals, and memory.

We're bringing back CDs! And with them, some timeless wisdom from a visionary peace leader of the past. Hear a recording of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking at the 1958 FGC Gathering. He spoke to Quakers about the importance of nonviolence and racial justice, acknowledging that while violence may win some things, it cannot win a lasting peace.

If it's been awhile since the deep, visionary voice of Dr. King has rung in your ears, this CD is for you! Available at QuakerBooks. A limited number of CDs is available.
