Want More Patience?

My Reflection For Today
"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!" — Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

Have you ever wanted to have more patience or have more self-control? Perhaps you desire to experience more peace, love, kindness, goodness, gentleness, joy, or faithfulness in your life.

Throughout my many years as a counselor and over thirty-five years in ministry, I have often heard people express a desire for these very qualities—the Fruit of the Spirit.

However, wishing alone will not bring about change. Transformation occurs when we practice spiritual disciplines such as worship, prayer, scripture meditation, fasting, and solitude. Engaging in these disciplines connects our spirit to the Holy Spirit and infuses our spiritual gifts with God's love, cultivating this fruit in our daily lives.

Unpacking these two verses fully is not possible in this short reflection, which is why being part of a faith community that teaches and follows what the Apostle Paul calls life in the Spirit and follow Christ is so essential.

The classic hymn "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian in My Heart" comes to mind today.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

A picture made in stained glass is worth even more. At the back of the sanctuary the center stained glass window is of Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist.

I have been preaching and teaching on the scripture of this event for many years and yet have only scratched the surface of all it can teach us about the Christian life. To have a window like this allows for us to sit under it like l did taking this picture and reflect on each aspect of what is now a sacrament of our faith.

The stained glass window in itself is a life long soul feeding meditation on the love of God. Complementing and enriching the stained glass window is the hand made wooden baptismal font underneath. The colors of the stained glass light up the baptismal bowl allowing for a shimmering of light across the Baptismal waters.

If you have a child you would like to have baptized, this is a sacred and meaningful place to do it.

Why Go To Church?

My Reflection For Today.
"We have become united with Christ, and we have died like he died. Because of that, we will also be united with him in his new life. Just like Christ rose, we also will rise to a new life." — Romans 6:5 (EASY)

The hymn "Blessed Assurance" came to mind when I read this verse this morning: "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine!"

During our worship service, I give the Assurance of Pardon after the prayer of Confession. We are assured by Christ's death on the cross of not only forgiveness but also our unity in Christ. As we pass the peace, we reflect on how amazing it is to be forgiven and to share in this unity with Christ and one another.

Our joy increases as we move through the service, being reminded of who we are and how this is just a taste of what is to come now and for eternity.

Each Sunday can be transformative, renewing, and life-changing if we reflect on what we are doing, why we are doing it, and what the result means for us now and forevermore. From the prelude to the postlude, there is an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to touch us, change us, renew us, and help us know the love of God through the spiritual discipline of worship!

Now that's a reason to come to church each Sunday!
