If these walls could talk it would be a voice of love, laughter, and happiness. This is the Potsdam Church of the Brethren’s Fellowship Hall (formerly known as “The Church Barn”). For many years it served as a storage barn until a group of men 40 or so years ago had a vision and worked to convert it into the building it is today. As I let the carpet cleaners in today, I thought what a blessing it was for a church to need to clean your carpets because it serves so many people! The Fellowship Hall also serves as the meeting place for the Wednesday night kids club that will be starting up September 16. Thank you to the men that had the vision to use this to better serve the community 40 years ago and I pray it is continued to be used for many more years.

In preparation for a medical emergency during our community events, the church has purchased 2 devices. We purchased an AED earlier this year with help from the Miami County Foundation and today we received a LifeVac. A LifeVac is a suction device meant to clear the airway during a choking emergency. A person dies every 37 minutes in the United States from a choking emergency. LifeVac has saved over 6700 lives in just four years. We hope neither has to be used, but we are thankful for the foresight to purchase these items for the church to be prepared.

The Church of the Brethren originated in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany, when a small group of eight Radical Pietists led by Alexander Mack sought to restore New Testament Christianity through believer's baptism in the Eder River. Blending Anabaptist and Pietist traditions, the early Brethren rejected formal state creeds in favor of following the New Testament as their guide, practicing nonresistance, and emphasizing a lifestyle of simple living and peace.Facing persecution in Europe, the community began emigrating to North America in 1719, establishing their first American congregation in 1723 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Over the centuries, the denomination expanded westward, founded educational institutions, and became widely recognized as one of the historic peace churches through active commitments to global relief, reconciliation, and community service.
