Repair to fallen and broken monuments is underway at Bayside, funded by a very generous donor. These markers are ineligible for state dangerous monument grants because they are no longer considered dangerous. The work is being carried out by Jeff Paro.

Bayside Cemetery has completed the next phase of a multi-year restoration project. Lupini Construction of Utica recently finished the restoration of the southern urn-bearing tower, a part of the sandstone entrance to the cemetery, which was constructed in 1905 of locally quarried Potsdam sandstone.

In 2023, the Bayside Cemetery Association commenced a multi-year effort to fully restore the entrance to the cemetery. That year, the tops of the towers were sealed to prevent water pe*******on and, last year, the cross-bearing tower was fully restored. This year, the third phase, the full restoration of the southern urn-bearing tower, was completed.

“The progress we have made in this restoration is due to the generosity of the Bayside and Potsdam Communities,” said Bayside Cemetery Association President Mark Lee. “We are so grateful for their support and wish to thank everyone for their generosity. The association also thanks the John and Dorotha VanNess Family Fund and the Rock Charitable Fund, both administered by the Northern New York Community Foundation, for their important support.”

Donations to support the Bayside Cemetery Association’s efforts to restore its historic sandstone entrance may be mailed to P.O. Box 491, Potsdam, NY 13676, or made online at baysidepotsdam.org/donate. As a 501(c)(13) nonprofit cemetery organization, contributions are tax-deductible, as allowed by law.

Earlier this year, Bayside Cemetery had an assessment done of its 400-plus trees by Burkum Plant Health & Tree Care. The assessment evaluated tree species, size, and general health. It also included recommendations for the care and maintenance of the trees and their value and impact on paths and monuments in the cemetery. The assessment was funded by generous donations from Mark and Cynthia Coleman and other local donors, and a grant from the Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund administered by the Northern New York Community Foundation. Left to right: Claire Burkum, Thomas Burkum, Ryan Burkum, and Bayside Sexton Lorelei Murdie.

Five Clarkson University Honors Program students recently spent time restoring monuments at Bayside Cemetery.

As part of a class project, sophomores Callan Abel, James Doyle, Steven Getsie, Jay Jezioro and Matthew Sitarek volunteered for a few hours each week, this fall, beginning in September

The five students worked in the very old sections of the cemetery, cleaning and straightening old headstones and footstones. They cleaned more than 75 headstones and straightened and/or righted over 40 stones.

“Bayside Cemetery thanks Callan, James, Steven, Jay and Mathew for all of their hard work,” said Sexton Lorelei Murdie

Bayside volunteers Trustee Mimi VanDeusen and Murdie worked with the students.
