One At The Wellspring Of Pain And Joy

From: The Wounded Healer: Ministry in Contemporary Society

When one has the courage to enter where life is experienced as most unique and most private, one touches the soul of the community.

The man who has spent many hours trying to understand, feel, and clarify the alienation and confusion of one of his fellow men might well be the best equipped to speak to the needs of the many, because all men are one at the wellspring of pain and joy.

---

Reflection Question: Who might you be called to listen deeply to today?

'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
- Luke 10:27

Come Home

From: A Spirituality of Homecoming

Jesus is the host who wants to gather us around the table, the Good Shepherd who invites his people to a table where the cup is overflowing (Ps. 23).

This is not a stern, harsh Lord, but the lamb of God who says, “Come into my home.”

We can read the whole Bible with this image in mind. God is continually inviting us to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of our life (Ps. 27:4). The Lord wants to be our home.

---

Reflection Question: How might centering the image of God inviting us home affect your reading of Scripture?

One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
- Psalm 27:4

Heart Speaks To Heart

From: The Road to Peace

The spiritual life means that the Spirit of Love is given to us so that we can live with that Spirit within us.

With that Spirit in us, we are able to recognize the same Spirit in the world. The Spirit blows where it wants, so the Spirit is everywhere. It's in the people who are dying, people with AIDS, people who are broken, and people with disabilities.

To watch for Christ in the world is to see that the spirit within us recognizes the Spirit among us so that the spirit speaks to Spirit, heart speaks to Heart, love speaks to Love.

To watch for Christ is to be attentive to the presence of Christ in the world and in our heart. It's not a kind of emotional or intellectual gymnastics.

If we carry God in our hearts, we see God in the world.

---

Reflection Question: How might you recognize the Spirit in your world today?

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
- Psalm 90:2

Making Love Visible

From: Following Jesus: Finding Our Way Home in an Age of Anxiety

It is God's love that allows us to love one another.

It is that first love that is the basis for all creative human relationships. It is that love that we want to make visible to each other, among each other, and with each other.

Jesus said, “Love one another because I have loved you first.”

---

Reflection Question: Who are you struggling to love today and how might making space to connect with God's love help you to respond in more loving ways?

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
- Psalm 36:7
