JUNE 3 ~ ST. CLOTILDA, Queen

ST. CLOTILDA was daughter of Chilperic, younger brother to Gondebald, the tyrannical King of Burgundy, who put him and his wife, and his other brothers, except one, to death, in order to usurp their dominions. Clotilda was brought up in her uncle’s court, and, by a singular providence, was instructed in the Catholic religion, though she was educated in the midst of Arians.

Her wit, beauty, meekness, modesty, and piety made her the adoration of all the neighboring kingdoms, and Clovis I., surnamed the Great, the victorious king of the Franks, demanded and obtained her in marriage. She honored her royal husband, studied to sweeten his warlike temper by Christian meekness, conformed herself to his humor in things that were indifferent, and, the better to gain his affections, made those things the subject of her discourse and praises in which she knew him to take the greatest delight.

When she saw herself mistress of his heart she did not defer the great work of endeavoring to win him to God, but the fear of giving offence to his people made him delay his conversion. His miraculous victory over the Alemanni, and his entire conversion in 496, were at length the fruit of our Saint’s prayers. Clotilda, having gained to God this great monarch, never ceased to excite him to glorious actions for the divine honor; among other religious foundations, he built in Paris, at her request, about the year 511, the great church of Sts. Peter and Paul, now called St. Genevieve’s.

This great prince died on the 27th of November, in the year 511, at the age of forty-five, having reigned thirty years. His eldest son, Theodoric, reigned at Rheims over the eastern parts of France, Clodomir reigned at Orleans, Childebert at Paris, and Clotaire I. at Soissons. This division produced wars and mutual jealousies, till in 560 the whole monarchy was reunited under Clotaire, the youngest of these brothers.

The dissension in her family contributed more perfectly to wean Clotilda’s heart from the world. She spent the remaining part of her life in exercises of prayer, almsdeeds, watching, fasting, and penance, seeming totally to forget that she had been queen or that her sons sat on the throne. Eternity filled her heart and employed all her thoughts. She foretold her death thirty days before it happened. On the thirtieth day of her illness, she received the sacraments, made a public confession of her faith, and departed to the Lord on the 3d of June, in 545.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. Michael Groves, a beloved parishioner who died yesterday evening. Michael loved his faith, the Catholic Church and our St Joan of Arc family. He was a true prayer warrior, leading the daily rosary before Mass for many years. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Eternal Rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen.

TODAY WE CELEBRATE ST. JOAN OF ARC (1431). "I am not afraid... I was born to do this."

This feast was transferred from Saturday to Monday as Saturday was still the Solemnity of the Octave of Pentecost which is of higher rank. We are having a Solemn High Mass this evening at 5:30 p.m. followed by a parish picnic to celebrate our St. Joan. A plenary indulgence is granted to Catholics who devoutly visit their parish church on its titular patronal feast day.

⚜️ Prayer to Saint Joan of Arc

O valiant Saint Joan, Maid of Orléans,
who heard the voices of Heaven in the fields of Domrémy and followed them with a pure and fearless heart, you who took up the standard of Christ and country against overwhelming darkness, not for glory but for the honor of God and the deliverance of your people:
On this your feast day, we turn to you.

Intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty, that we too may have the grace of holy boldness, the clarity to discern God’s will amid confusion, and the strength to stand firm even when the world demands we bend.

Guard our families, our nations, and our Church from every false spirit and invading evil.

Kindle in us the fire of your love for the Eucharist and the Faith, so that we may fight the good fight with clean hands and a humble soul, trusting always in the victory that comes through Jesus Christ alone.

Saint Joan, patroness of soldiers and the brave of heart, pray for us sinners now, that we may one day share with you the eternal crown of those who loved God unto the end.
Amen. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

On this blessed Sunday, May 31, 2026, the Church Celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, One God in Three Divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

“Rise, you who were lying fast asleep…. Rise and hurry to the Church: here is the Father, here is the Son, here is the Holy Spirit.” ~ St. Ambrose

EPISTLE
Romans 11:33-36
O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and recompense shall be made him? For of him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen.

GOSPEL
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

SATURDAY IN WHITSUN WEEK ~ Our Lady’s Day

This is the last day of Paschal Time; it is the last of the Pentecost Octave; we must not allow it to pass without our offering to the Queen of Saints the homage that is so justly her due, and without presenting our adoration and praise to the Holy Ghost for all the glorious things he has achieved in her.

After the sacred Humanity of our Redeemer, which received from this Holy Spirit every gift that could make it worthy, as far as a creature can be, of the Divine Nature to which the Incarnation united it—Mary’s soul and whole being were adorned with grace above all other creatures together. It could not but be so, as must be evident to us if we reflect for a moment upon the meaning of a “Mother of God.”

Mary in her single self forms a world apart in the order of grace; she alone was, for a short time, the Church of Jesus. The Holy Spirit was at first sent for her alone, and he filled her with Grace from the instant of her Immaculate Conception. That Grace developed itself in her, by the continuous action of the Holy Ghost until at length she became worthy, as far as a creature could be, of conceiving and giving birth to the very Son of God, who became thus the Son of Mary.

During these days of Pentecost, we have seen the new gifts wherewith the Divine Spirit prepared her for her new office. Is it possible for us her Children to think of all these things and not be ardent in our admiration of her? or not be overflowing with gratitude for the august Paraclete, who has deigned to show such munificence to this our own matchless Mother?

At the same time we cannot help being overpowered with delight at the thought of the perfection, wherewith this favorite of the Holy Spirit corresponded with the graces she received from him. Not one was lost, not one was fruitless, as is sometimes the case with even the holiest souls. At her very commencement she was as the rising morn; (Song of Solomon 6:9); from that time, her sanctity gradually mounted to the mid-day of its perfection, and that mid-day was to have no setting. Even before the Archangel announced to her that she was to conceive the Son of God in her chaste womb, she had already conceived him in her soul, as the Holy Fathers teach us.

The Eternal Word loved her as his Spouse, even before he conferred upon her the honor of being his Mother. If Jesus could say of a soul that had needed regeneration: “They that seek me will find me in the heart of Gertrude,”—what must have been the harmony of soul existing between him and his Blessed Mother? how close must have been their union? Trials of the severest kind awaited her in this world; she bore them all with heroic fortitude; and when the hour came for her to unite her own sacrifice with that made by her Son, she was ready.

After Jesus’ Ascension, the Holy Ghost descended upon her; he opened out to her a new career, which would require her being an exile for many long years from the heaven where her Son was reigning:—she did not hesitate to accept the bitter chalice thus offered to her; she proved herself to be indeed the Handmaid of the Lord, desirous above all other things to do his will in every tittle.
So that the triumph of the Holy Ghost in Mary’s person was of the most perfect kind: how grand soever might be his gifts, she worthily corresponded with them all.

The sublime office of Mother of God, to which she was called, entitled her to graces in keeping with such a dignity; she received them and turned them to the richest account. In return for her fidelity, as also in consideration of her incomparable dignity, the Holy Ghost allotted to Mary the place she well merited in the great work he had come to do, namely, “the Consummation of the Saints and the formation of the Church, the Body of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:12)

Her divine Son is the Head of the immense Body of the Faithful; he gives it unity; but she herself represents the Neck, whereby life and motion are communicated from the Head to the rest of the Body. Jesus is the chief agent; but he acts upon each member through Mary. Her union with the Incarnate Word is immediate on account of her being to him what no other creature could be; but with regard to us, the graces and favors, the light and consolation, which we receive from our Divine Head, come to us through Mary.

Hence the influence of this Blessed Mother upon the Church in general, and upon each individual in particular. She unites us to her Son, and he unites us to the Divinity. The Father gave us his Son; the Son chose a Mother from among his creatures; and the Holy Ghost, by giving fruitfulness to this Virgin Mother, perfected the union of Creatures with their Creator. The end God proposed in creation was to effect this union; and now that the Son is glorified and the Holy Ghost is come, we understand the whole divine plan. More favored than those who lived before the descent of the Divine Spirit, we have, not only in promise but in reality, a Brother who is crowned with the diadem of the divinity; a Paraclete who is to abide with us forever, to enlighten our path and strengthen us; a Mother whose intercession is all powerful; a Church, a second Mother, by and from whom we receive all these blessings.

MAY 30 ~ ST. JOAN OF ARC

Joan of Arc’s story is nothing but extraordinary. Born in Domremy, Champagne, in 1412, she was a peasant girl who received from on high the mission of leading France militarily against the invading English.

Joan’s father was Jacques D’Arc, a farmer of some means, and her mother a kind, caring woman. One of five children, Joan was a pious, prayerful and charitable girl.

In 1415, when Joan was three, the English king, Henry V, taking advantage of a civil war between the Dukes of Orleans and Burgundy, invaded Normandy and claimed several cities. Things were going from bad to worse for France when, in the village of Domremy, God began to put in motion a most unexpected solution.

Joan of Arc - visions of St Michael and Sts. Catherine and Margaret
At age thirteen, Joan began to receive visions of St. Michael and Sts. Catherine and Margaret who gently prepared her for her mission.

By 1428, when she was about sixteen, the saints insisted that Joan go to Charles VII, the ineffectual heir to the throne and offer him to lead an army with the objective of repelling the English, and crowning him king. The frightened girl resisted but finally took action on being assured that her extraordinary calling “was God’s will”.

Joan persuaded an uncle to take her to the nearby town of Vaucouleurs to the commander, Robert de Baudricourt. At first Baudricourt and his entourage laughed at the maiden, but when Joan announced that the city of Orleans had just fallen to the English, and the fact was later verified, hilarity turned to respect.

Accompanied by respectful soldiers, and dressed in a man’s clothing for her personal protection, Joan traveled to the court of Charles VII who, wishing to test the visionary maiden, hid himself among his courtiers. But Joan promptly picked him out, and set at rest for him an intimate doubt he had secretly prayed about as to his legitimacy as true son of the king of France, Charles VI.

Ultimately, after extensive debriefing and debate, Joan was outfitted with armor, sword and a white-gold standard bearing the names of Jesus and Mary, and an image of God the Father and angels offering Him a Fleur-des-Lys, the symbol of France.

In the company of the Duke of Orleans, other French nobles, and their armies she freed the besieged city of Orleans. To everyone’s amazement, Joan proved an effective general and strategist, though she never personally killed a man.

St Joan of Arc on horseback
After other victories, she and her army accompanied the reluctant prince to Rheims where he was triumphantly crowned. But after his coronation the weak king began to haggle with Joan, and ultimately failed and abandoned her.

In a skirmish outside the city of Compiegne, she was taken prisoner and led to Rouen where she underwent an infamous “trial” conducted by a bishop, Pierre Cauchon, who courted English favor. She suffered a long, painful imprisonment, was finally branded a heretic and a sorceress and condemned to burned at the stake. She was nineteen years old.

To the very end she sustained that her “voices” had not deceived her. Her last gasping word was “Jesus!” Although the flames consumed her virginal body, her heart never burned.

What Joan had begun others picked up and France was ultimately freed.

Twenty-three years after her death, Joan’s mother and brothers appealed to Pope Callistus III for a re-trial. This new trial completely vindicated the “Maid of Orleans”on July 7, 1456.

Joan was canonized on May 16, 1920.
