History of Porum Assembly of God

In the spring of 1933, ten acres of cotton was planted in the old Vann School community. Christian people from all around came in wagons on foot, or horseback to chop and pick cotton. This was all volunteer labor. In the fall the wagonload of cotton was hauled to the Webber Falls gin and sold. The money received from the sale of cotton was used to build the first Assembly of God church in Porum, Oklahoma.

Rev. Dave Harris and his wife, Mary, started the church and they, as well as others gave generously of their money to help finance it.

The rocks for the foundation were hauled in by farmers who donated their time and labor and the use of their wagons.

And so began a church in Porum which has ministered to thousands throughout the 87 years of its existence. Many great services, revivals and Vacation Bible Schools have been witnessed by the people during these years. The present structure was erected in 1961 under the pastorate of Rev. Doyle Davis. The addition of the kitchen and fellowship area and interior remodeling of the sanctuary was done in 1973 during the pastorate of Rev. M.K. McElhannon. Also, additional property was acquired to the west of the church. The entry was changed to the south and the covered entry, pastors office and additional restrooms were added in 1990 during the pastorate of Rev. Dale Floyd.
