Sinai was built in September 18, 1956 in connection with RZUA (Reform Zion Apostolic Churches of America). Sinai RZUA Church’, the church bore the name of ‘Morgan’s Temple’, named for its founder, Rev. The first church building was located on Pearl Street in Portsmouth, Virginia. After building the new church, it was decided that the name should be changed. The members agreed on a more biblical na

me, “Mt. The first service of Mt. Sinai was held June 5, 1958, with Pastor J. Other pastors that followed were Rev. J. L. Calloway, Rev. Barnes, Rev. Freddie Hicks, Rev. James Shannon, Rev. David Wiggins, Rev. Wilkins, and Rev. Horace Allen. Rev. of Greater Bethel AME Church was called serveral times to preach by the officer of the church, Dea. William Merritt, until he was finally elected as pastor by the members in 1980. Years later the LORD laid on Pastor Johnson’s heart to build GOD a church. With the help of the members, the church was designed in 1998 by his son-n-law Elder Johnny Lassiter, Sr. and constructed and completed by the VICO Construction Company on October 21, 2001. The new construction then became New Mt. Sinai RZUA Church, 103 Gust Lane, Portsmouth, VA. In August 2015 the Pastor and the members decided to go independent and non-denominated as the New Mt. Sinai Church.

Today we remember and honor a life well lived. Though Pastor Johnson went home to be with the Lord last year, today would have marked his 93rd birthday. His faith, wisdom, and love for people left an imprint that time cannot erase. We are grateful for the years we were blessed with him, for the sermons that strengthened us, the prayers that covered us, and the example of a life devoted to God.
