Sunday gatherings — Sailing the Worldly Winds: A Buddhist Path through the Ups and Downs of Life
Meditation, Dharma, Community — Every Sunday, 10-11:45am at Gateway Taiji in Portsmouth (875 Islington) or online on Zoom. Link in bio.
The title for our upcoming program comes from the book by Triratna Order member Vajragupta, Sailing the Worldly Winds: A Buddhist Path through the Ups and Downs of Life* (Windhorse Publications, 2011). With Vajragupta’s guidance, we’ll be building on the Buddha’s teaching on how to become less reactive to “worldly conditions” that buffet us day in and day out — gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and infamy, pleasure and pain. Following his inspiring metaphor of sailing with the wind, we’ll bring the fundamental principles of conditionality, impermanence and karma to bear on the challenges of navigating day-to-day life in a wise and ethical way.
“On one level,” writes Vajragupta, “we know that the winds of change are blowing constantly; it sounds obvious, self-evident. And yet on some other level, deep down, we expect life to be fair, to come right. Our little irritations and disappointments, our sense of hurt and injustice when we don’t get what we want, reveal this underlying delusion. Learning to sail the worldly winds involves learning when we need to give up on our desires, adjusting them to the reality of the situation. Whilst matching our desires to the world will be difficult, expecting the world to match our desires is utterly futile.”
Join us for mornings of meditation, reflection and friendly conversation as we explore how to apply this perspective to our own lives and sail more skillfully and smoothly with the worldly winds.
