Last week we looked at how Romans concluded that we all stand guilty and condemned before God because of our sin. This week we looked at Paul’s encouraging words in Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” How can we go from being condemned to having NO condemnation?

Because Jesus took our place when he died on the cross! He paid the full price WE owed and bore the full punishment WE deserved! The price of sin was death, but Jesus paid it for us. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Through believing in what Jesus did for you, YOU can be forgiven so that you have “no condemnation,” and also receive the free gift of eternal life in heaven!

Exodus 12:5 “Your lamb shall be without blemish…” From the time of the first passover, God made it clear that the lamb used for the sacrifice must be PERFECT. Every year the Jewish people would bring their lambs to the priest to be inspected for imperfections. Only ones with no blemishes or deformities would be deemed worthy to be sacrificed for their sins.

Jesus also went through an inspection by the high priest. In fact, He went through several trials, by Jewish and Roman leaders, before He died on the cross. But though they threw many false accusations at Him, He had no sin in Him. And that is why Pilate concluded after His last trial, “...I find no fault in him” (John 19:6). Yet they crucified Him anyway. The fact that Jesus was sinless is why He was the only one who could take away our sins! Just as the innocent lambs were sacrificed, only the perfect Son of God could completely atone for our sins, so that those who accept His sacrifice might be given HIS righteousness! 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Last night in our Wednesday night Bible Study we started our overview of the book of ROMANS! Written by the apostle Paul from the city of Corinth during his 3rd missionary journey (around AD 56), this letter was not written to a church, as Christian churches were illegal there at the time. Rather, it was written “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints” (Romans 1:7), and would have been passed around the growing network of believers there.

This book is best known today for its clear and precise explanation of the Gospel. This is often shared using the “Romans Road,” a collection of some of the simplest verses that outline God’s plan of salvation, which includes Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, 10:9-10, and 10:13. We pray that you will read these verses for yourself and consider their truth. Last night we looked at how the first several chapters of Romans underscore the first important step towards understanding salvation…

There is no such thing as a “good person”! Romans 3:23 makes it clear: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” We must first admit that we are ALL sinners if we are to understand why we ALL need Jesus to save us!

Have you ever been betrayed by a friend? How about being betrayed by ALL of your friends at once? On the darkest night of His life… this is exactly what happened to Jesus.

His own friend and disciple, Judas, betrayed Him for 30 pieces of silver to the people who would put Him to death! This did not take Jesus by surprise. The Bible had prophesied centuries earlier that “mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me” (Ps 41:9). Jesus knew what Judas would do. And He knew what the others would do… Because, while we all want to point fingers at Judas, the betrayals didn’t stop with him. Peter, one of Jesus’ closest companions, betrayed Him three times that night by denying that he even knew Him. And when Judas arrived with torches and swords to arrest Jesus, Matthew 26:56 tells us “...Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.” ALL of His disciples betrayed Him!

May we recognize that ALL of us, today, are betraying Jesus when we refuse to stand up for Him, when we are ashamed to identify with Him, and when we forsake Him and His ways to do our own pleasure! May we be faithful friends, and stand with Jesus today!

Here at Bible Missionary Baptist Church, missions are very important to us! Because God has called us to “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). So it is always special when we are visited by the missionaries God has called us to partner with and support.

Last Sunday we were blessed with a visit from the Mendoza family, our missionaries to Brazil, on their furlough. God has been using them in so many creative ways to spread the truth of the Gospel to the Brazilian people. But there are so many yet to be told: not just in Brazil, but around the world.

So please join us in prayer for Aaron Mendoza and his family, along with the many missionaries around the world who are laboring to reach the lost! God can work miracles through His people when they are willing, whether on foreign soil or your own neighborhood. May we be faithful to share the good news of salvation!

On Sunday our visiting missionary, Brother Mendoza, preached a message about grace. Grace is a recurring theme in the Bible that is seen in many different ways. In this story, it is seen in the word “kindness,” because kindness that is voluntarily given without being earned is grace. As this verse shows, King David wasn’t looking to show kindness to someone who had earned his favor, but for someone he didn’t even know. Someone who did nothing to deserve it and who he would have traditionally been expected to kill, to protect his country from civil war. All for the sake of someone else–David’s friend Jonathan. God did that for all of us in offering us salvation. We do not deserve it, yet God wants to show His kindness to us. All for the sake of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Praise God for grace!

2 Samuel 9:3 “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.”
