Our Story
Glory to Jesus Christ!
St. Irene Byzantine Catholic Church began in 1987 as the Byzantine Catholic Mission of Portland, and was founded by Fr. Joseph Stanichar (now Hegumen of Duchovny Dom Monastery in Weston, OR). Fr. Joseph would drive 3-hours from Seattle one Sunday per month to celebrate Divine Liturgy. In 1988, these monthly Divine Liturgies moved to St. Patrick’s, and were eventually celebrated on Saturday evenings.
In 1991, the Byzantine Catholic Mission Society of the Pacific Northwest purchased a residential property with a large garage on Clatsop Street. The garage was converted into a Byzantine chapel, with Divine Liturgies being celebrated Saturday evenings.
Fr. James Barrand was assigned to the Portland Mission from 1994 to 1995, provided a full liturgical schedule, including Divine Liturgies every Sunday morning, and the mission church began to grow.
