My Dad was an accomplished pianist, in addition to being a decorated Polish WWII hero and a forty-year veteran editor for the Polish Desk at Radio Free Europe. Shown on the left at his impressively cluttered desk, and on the right on a Hungarian passport made out to Andor Varga in August of 1942.
He could whip out a bunch of Chopin piano pieces on our home upright, without even cracking his knuckles or warming up, and nail them flawlessly. This often happened on Sunday mornings, before or after we went to the Polish church.
He died twenty-five tears ago today, aged 84.

This album (CD) marks the beginning of a happy and harmonious collaboration with the late Tom McFarland. It started with the Portland Underground Blues Festival, which has since ballooned into the gigantic Waterfront Blues Festival, but was held in the downtown basement club called The Last Hurrah in its early days. I saw Tom playing there, with Johnny (J.W.) Moore on drums and Bill Coones on bass. When I spoke to Tom and asked him if he'd like to do a record project with Flying Heart (he already had an album out on Arhoolie) he looked me dead in the eye to see if I was full of BS, determined on the spot that I was legit, and agreed to meet. Everything ran so smoothly. When we had an appointment at Rodney Dahl's photography studio (Rod took the cover photo and a bunch of others) we both pulled up and parked our cars at exactly the same time, it was like synchronicity and felt like a sign.
We recorded the album at Desitrek in one session. Everything clicked. Another CD called "Voodoo Garden" followed a couple of years later.
"Just Got In From Portland" can be downloaded via CD Baby, or you can still get a physical CD from me.

This was another unusual project with Chris Newman. He talked me into it. He basically recorded it all by himself, except for using Lance Paden on drums. It was one of several Flying Heart albums recorded at Gary Schroeder's GAS House studio. Chris sold me the publishing rights to these songs, which were actually recycled older material of his, already assigned to previously contracted publishers. Well ... they *are* good songs. It's a very Chris Newman album. The cover picture was taken in the KBOO engineering room.
Available in digital form from CD Baby, or in physical CD form from me.

Remembering the late, great Janice Scroggins, on what would have been her 70th birthday. Detail of a photograph by Beth Keegan, taken on the porch of the Glad Pad. She and I were the same age (give or take a couple'a months). Janice's understanding of music -- what it is, what it does, how it works -- went several steps deeper than mine. She had a firm grasp of some areas that are still enigmatic to me. I loved working with her on every one of the 100 gigs we played.
