Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church

Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church We are a bridge-building congregation located in Mt. Tabor neighborhood. All are welcome. Mt. We know that the Holy Spirit is at work in our world ahead of us.

Tabor Presbyterian Church, as a people called by God, experiences God’s unconditional love through Jesus. We worship together, and follow Jesus by:
– opening our doors
– sharing sacred space
– listening
– serving
– creating
– learning
All this we do in the hope that God’s shalom will be made real and tangible for the healing of our neighborhoods and the nations. The Story, in Brief

Mt. Tabor Pres

byterian Church organized as a church in 1892 and built a wood structure on the corner of 55th and Belmont. That building was moved down to the corner of 55th and Stark in 1910 to make room for the stone structure which now stands in its place, and on its original foundation. In 1929, the building was expanded and the Parish House was added to give the Sunday School program its new home. The Russell Wing was added for classrooms (downstairs) and offices (upstairs) in 1965. From the first, the buildings here were funded by community and congregation and were intended to be used as worship and community space. Over the life of this congregation, its fortunes have ebbed and flowed, as have all communities. After 100 years of a vibrant and bustling congregational life, things began to diminish. Parts of the building lay empty much of the time, most of the doors remained locked except for Sunday morning. The building itself fell into disrepair, which led the congregation to become re-energized around a re-building program at the turn of the millennium. The restored structure continued to look for the new life which would make its home here, while the congregation continued to shrink. The warm, stained-glass-lit space on the southeast corner had become an elegant storage room, which smelled of dust. But from the dust, seeds of a new vision began to emerge. This could be a space for gathering again, as it was intended in the beginning. As a step on the journey toward this new life, we opened our doors to the community again on June 23, 2009 with the grand re-opening of the Bell Tower entrance on the corner, long boarded up, to a newly renovated coffeehouse and community space: TaborSpace. Months later, the Parish House Partners – small businesses and non-profit groups – began to take up residence. These were folks who needed space in order to do their work of healing, creating, teaching, serving, and caring for the earth. Their purposes found a home in this space created to do exactly these things. So now we are three streams in one river – Congregation, TaborSpace, Parish House Partners – together in the task of making shalom real and tangible on the corner of 55th and Belmont in SE Portland, Oregon.

Come explore how the impossible is made possible. Sundays 10:00 in-person or on Zoom.

Out-of-the-box God, I dream of a vibrant church full of intergenerational joy. I dream of a country without hunger and a world without war. I dream of a neighborhood where we know each other’s names, and a city where we eradicate poverty. I have dreams stacked upon dreams and can’t help but wonder—what if they aren’t impossible? Show me the work that is mine to do. Amen.

“Servants are normally meant to be inconspicuous, so I wanted to focus on the servant who goes to the chief steward with a cup full of what, as far as he’s concerned, is water.

If Jesus—whose ministry has not started, so there haven’t been any wonders associated with him yet—tells you to fill jars with water and draw from the jar to give to the chief steward, what is going through your mind at that moment? I invite the viewer to focus on this servant and all his curiosity and expectation, and think of a time when you were surprised by something God did. What actions preceded the miracle? Did it make sense? What did you know, and what was hidden from you? What ‘secrets’ might God be keeping from you now as God works clandestinely on your behalf?”

This Lenten Season, we are investigating and wrestling with “Tell Me Something Good: Grounding Ourselves in the Good News”.

On this first Sunday of Lent in today’s discussion, Pastor Amanda asked “What does Lent mean to you?” As you can imagine, there are as many answers to that question as there were people there. She challenged us to look for the good news this week and to rest in it.

Also during Lent, we will be writing onto paper leaves where it is that we see the Good News, and then assembling them onto a tree. Its a work in progress. We are a work in progress. And, we are better together.

Please join us Sundays at 10:00. All are welcome.

Come Explore with this morning at 10:00, in-person or online! The Good News is here for you!

“Behold: Jesus’ debut act of ministry. It’s not a healing, or an exorcism, or turning tables for justice. Jesus’ first act is to help ensure a party becomes the best party possible. It’s a total surprise.

Because this… this is who Jesus is. Jesus doesn’t have to begin with defeating evil because he knows ultimately evil doesn’t stand a chance against a God who loves disco and his mother. Evil doesn’t stand a chance against a God who is not only not afraid of scarcity, but laughs in the face of it. Evil doesn’t stand a chance against a God who will never let an empty cistern or full tomb have the final word. Evil is predictable. But our God loves a surprise because God knows the plot twist is the same every time: God’s goodness will overflow. Every single time.”
