Happy Birthday to St. Thomas More Parish!

St. Thomas More Catholic Church is 85 years old! On June 21, 1936, at 9:00am, Fr. Francis Schaefers became the first pastor of St. Thomas More and offered the first Mass. As is still the tradition today, Mass was announced with the ringing of bells.

St. Thomas More had been canonized the year before STM opened its doors and was selected our patron by Fr. Schaefers and Fr. John Laidlaw. As the patron saint of professionals, students and lawyers - and as a layman, husband and father who was loyal to his family, his country and his Catholic beliefs — St. Thomas More seemed to best represent the Portland Heights and Green Hills area and the Catholic community of the time.

We pray in thanksgiving for the early pioneers who founded our parish and for the many, many members of our faith community who have helped to steward its mission through its long history. The impact of our beloved STM is beyond measure. We look forward to celebrating this special milestone this fall.

Fr. King burned the remaining blessed palms today. Traditionally, the ashes from this burn would be used during next Ash Wednesday.

Today is Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday—the day on which Jesus washed the feet of his discusples. On this day, Jesus instituted the sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the ministerial priesthood. Join us for Holy Thursday Mass this evening at 7pm. Sign up at stmpdx.org.

A Mass intention is a special way to honor a loved one, celebrate a special occasion, say thank you, offer prayers for a dearly departed, or remember an anniversary. We will do our best to schedule your Mass intention on the date requested, but the earlier you make your request, the better. A stipend of $10 is suggested per Mass intention. Call the Parish office to schedule your Mass intention.

It's Run for MORE Week! Good luck to our students as they run during PE class...and beyond. We are excited to hear how many minutes you move! All proceeds will be shared between the STM Arts & Enrichment Fund and this year's charity partner: the Blanchet House. We are excited to support the Blanchet House to celebrate the good work they do and to honor our Class of 2020 who volunteered there as its Project HOPE partner. Prayer for Servants of the Church is a ministry of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. A day each month is set aside to pray for a priest — along with a deacon, woman religious, seminarian or brother — serving in the Archdiocese of Portland. Saturday, May 16, is the day assigned for Fr. King! Please remember him, and all who serve the church, in your daily prayers.
