J.13 November training weekend done! We had an amazing time getting to know each other as a group, learning what it means to be Student Leaders, finding new ways to share our faith, planning some upcoming events, and even discovering some hidden talents.

Mission J.13 - Days 9 & 10 - Saturday-Sunday, June 22nd-23rd - JUST 1,300 MILES TO GO! - Through Northern Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Oregon, we made our way home, arriving Sunday evening. Many thanks to our awesome drivers and adult volunteers, Ken, Tod, Lisa, and Matt. By all accounts Mission J.13 was a HUGE success! Team members Natasha, Johnathan, Tyler, Levi, Afton, and Caitlin did a great job, and so did, Josh, Oscar and even baby Lucy! What a terrific team and what a great time of mission and ministry! Many thanks to all who have accompanied us along this journey through your prayers, support, and social media engagement. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, contact one of the participating churches to learn when and how they will be sharing in person (Woodland Park BC, Rivergate BC, FBC Lincoln City, FBC Cottage Grove, and Calvary Baptist Church). For any who are in Portland on Sunday, June 30th, we will be sharing during their worship service at 11am PST. The service will also be broadcast via live-streaming through the Woodland Park BC page on June 30th. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Mission J.13 - Day 8 - Friday, June 8th - A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RAINBOW ACRES - Today each student helped lead Prayer Circle by sharing about a personality from the Bible in the first person. Cat did a great job leading the prayer time! Afton, Levi, and Ken proved their metal as sheet-rockers while the rest of the team did a great job wrapping up the rest of our projects. Other groups will come from ABC congregations in other parts of the United States to pick up where we left off. This is one way we partner together as a family of churches. The afternoon provided us with numerous opportunities to interact with ranchers one last time through sharing meals, conversation and even playing a cold water bottle version of “hot potato” (it was 100 degrees here today!). We had a great debrief session tonight and even though we are looking forward to the journey home via Salt Lake City On Saturday, we will miss our new friends and brothers and sisters in Christ here at Rainbow Acres. We have all learned something important about sharing our faith, service, and community while on this trip. Please pray for us as we embark on the journey back to Oregon.

Mission J.13 - Day 7 - Thursday, June 20th - A GRAND DAY! - You can’t come to Arizona without going there. You know what we’re talking about...the Grand Canyon! And boy is it GRAND! We left early in the morning and made it to the South Rim of the canyon. What an amazing place to experience the beauty of God’s creation! Not much more to say, except look at the pictures! On the way home enjoyed the sunset in Sedona before returning home so that team members could prepare to lead Prayer Circle on Friday morning. We are looking forward to spending time with the Ranchers on Friday before heading back to Oregon on Saturday. Thank you to all who have been praying for our journey.

Mission J.13 - Day 6 - Wednesday, June 19th - SPACKLE ANCIENT AND MODERN - 99 degrees in Camp Verde today. Yikes! The trick is to work early in the morning. Today the team really came together and worked efficiently, almost finishing the spackle and paint on the medical center. We have a great team! Cat, Tyler, Jonathan, and Levi have proven themselves as skilled painters. Natasha and Afton are artists with the texturing. Josh has been a big help around the job site too. And Tod and Ken are terrific foremen. Great work guys! Lunch with the ranchers today was a lot of fun. We are really beginning to build friendships with them and Lucy has become our unofficial mascot! Had some great conversations with the Ranchers. Their courage and faith is an inspiration to us all. Just a couple miles from Rainbow Acres, we were able to check out some ancient dwellings constructed by people who lived here about 1,000 years ago. Even in ancient times, people were spackling buildings in this area! The rich history and culture of this area is a source of pride for many of the ranchers and staff we have talked with here. It is truly an honor to serve and to learn together. Please continue to pray for our journey.

Mission J.13 - Day 5 - Tuesday, June 18th - GOSPEL, SPACKLE, AND REDROCKS - We have settled into a rhythm here. 8:30am is prayer circle with the ranchers. Today we shared the story of Jesus healing blind Bartimaus through a freeze-frame performance and a devotional. We were all challenged by the Gospel call to see Jesus for who he really is. At 9:30am we start our work projects. Today we helped construct a ‘shade house’ that the Ranchers use for growing produce that is used to feed the community here. This was necessary because a recent tornado destroyed the old one. Then, we fellowship with the Ranchers over lunch in the cafeteria. This is followed by an afternoon of more work projects. This afternoon we continued working on the remodel of the building that will be used for a medical center. The focus was on spackling the walls and preparing them for paint. 4pm we gather together in Oikos apartment to debrief and do Bible study as a team. Then, at 5pm, we split into 4 small groups for the highlight of each day, which is sharing a family-style dinner with Ranchers in their homes. Afterwards, tonight we enjoyed a special treat, traveling just about 20 miles away to Sedona, home of Arizona’s famous redrocks. What a full day! We topped it all off with milkshakes and tater tots at Sonic. God is good.

Mission J.13 Day 4 - Monday, June 17th - OUR FIRST FULL DAY AT RAINBOW ACRES - This place is amazing! Started our day with Pastor Tod leading the daily “Prayer Circle,” using the story of David and Goliath to make the point that God can use anybody to do unexpected things. We were able to introduce ourselves to the ranchers, who welcomed us with open arms. They were so excited to have us with them that we showed up a half hour early just for meet and greet to make sure there would be enough time for the rest of the day’s activities. What a jam-packed day it has been! Toured the property, rolled up our sleeves to help with a project to remodel the health center, led games with the ranchers, and spent time as a team studying the Word. The highlight of the day was splitting up into small groups and sharing dinner with ranchers and caregivers in their homes. This truly is a unique and Christ-centered community. We will do what we can to serve them but it’s already quite clear that the ranchers and the staff here will be the ones to leave a permanent impression on our lives.

Keeping cool and hydrated on the road was the name of the game on Sunday as our team crossed from California into the great state of Arizona. God has blessed us with safe travels and we have arrived safely at our destination in Camp Verde—Rainbow Acres. Rainbow Acres is a Christian community established by our American Baptist family to serve those with developmental disabilities. We’ve only just arrived but already there is a powerful feeling of the Lord’s presence as we think about all who have served in this beautiful place.

Mission J.13 Day 2 - Saturday, June 15th - TRAVELING THROUGH THE NEVER-ENDING PART OF CALIFORNIA - California is one big state! We started our day with time in the Word based on Psalm 23, reflecting on our expectations for the trip. Traveling together, we also got to know one another. And capped it all off with a burger from the famous In and Out. It’s good to finally be in Bakersfield. Tomorrow we are Arizona bound!
