Please listen to yourself! Isn’t it amazing how much of our conversation is about COVID-19!
We are focusing on the outward matters during this crisis like our economy, who is essential and a hero or heroine and who isn’t essential! We talk about who is employed or who is not, we talk about the restrictions and see who is wearing a mask, how many are social distancing, who is buying too much toilet paper, or raiding the hamburgers —because we are in a mode of reaction!
Could we re-direct our thoughts for a moment? Could we look inward instead of outward as a people, as a church, as an individual?
Okay! What is God saying to us? What is He doing? Is this crisis simply natural, man-made, medical, economic, or is the God of the universe nudging us to think and pray, giving us an opportunity to listen to His voice? What is God saying to my heart? Am I just lukewarm or cold and gawking outward or do I sense a warning? Who is my real God? Do I covet the comforts of a powerful, luxurious economy? Could the changes we are seeing be a prelude to a time of greater restrictions, or sufferings, and continued rebellion against God? Have we re-thought our values, our morality, our right to life emergency, our accountability to God? What matters to us as a people? Do we like this world gone wild? Has any leader really drawn us to give attention to our souls or even mentioned the word among all the physical and medical hubbub? Do humans still have eternal souls? Is there a connection to our behavior and world events? Does God have an actual plan revealed for us and this earth?
Must we only listen to the voice of advertisements and experts or is God speaking, too? What is being said in His Holy Word or His Holy Church? Is my church holy?
Did you ever stop to think that the first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3) and the tenth commandment, “You shall not covet…”(Exodus 20:17) mean the same? Jesus said the Greatest Commandment was to love the LORD GOD with all of our heart, soul, and mind (Matt 22:37). So to have another god is to covet. To covet is to love something or someone else before God! Let’s look with Jesus upon our own spirit and soul to see if I really love Him or if I am coveting other people or things.
Let’s spread the good news that Jesus saves and Jesus knows what He is doing. Thank you for your prayers and gifts that send this gospel from your helping hands of partnership to the other side of the world and here at home! Jesus loves us. He calls us from the world to worship
