Central Bible Church Notice of Dissolution (posted Sept. 29, 2012 on CBC web site)

In February 2020, the members of Central Bible Church voted to approve the proposal by the board of elders to cease operating as a church and to invest the assets of Central Bible Church to fund new churches and kingdom ventures in the city of Portland. After more than a year and a half of hard work to finalize the affairs of the church, the final articles of dissolution for Central Bible Church have been submitting and accepted by the Oregon Attorney General as of September 16, 2021.

In accordance with our bylaws, the assets from Central Bible Church have been distributed to Christian non-profits of like mission and purpose. The following organizations have received funds from the dissolution of Central Bible Church:

Stone Table Church: A church plant representing leaders and members from Central Bible Church. They received seed money to help fund their first year of operations.

Converge Northwest: A church planting network and denomination with which Stone Table Church is affiliated. Converge NW will distribute the remaining support for Stone Table Church over the next 2-3 years.

Skate Church: A ministry started by Central Bible Church that is raising money for their building fund. Funds were given to help them purchase a new building.

Brilliance Labs: A new non-profit that will be stewarding the majority of funds from Central Bible Church with the purpose of supporting new churches and kingdom impact social enterprises in the City of Portland.

The Central Bible Church web site will remain active for at least thirty days. Once the site is shuttered, The Central Bible Church page will remain active as a place for former members to stay in touch.

THE SALE OF THE CENTRAL BIBLE CHURCH PROPERTY IS COMPLETED (posted originally July 8, 2021 on CBC website)

After over a year of working with potential buyers we are pleased to announce that the Central Bible Church property at 8815 NE Glisan Street has been purchased by the Oregon Chapter of Volunteers of America. Volunteers of America is a Christian ministry celebrating 125 years of service. Known as “the church without walls,” VOA seeks to reflect Jesus’ love for all people, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized. VOA of Oregon runs programs throughout the State that focus on serving the aging population, youth, those being released from incarceration, those with disabilities, and people struggling with addictions.

According to a spokesperson from VOA, they are still in the early stages of planning but they hope to use the former Central Bible Church building and campus to co-locate a number of the existing programs that they are running in the city of Portland. Some of these may include:
A family relief nursery drop-in
Treatment and recovery services
Out-patient services
Counseling services
According to their spokesperson, VOA will seek to use the existing CBC building rather than replacing it with a new facility.

THE AFFAIRS OF CENTRAL BIBLE CHURCH ARE BEING WRAPPED UP
Finalizing the affairs of an 89-year-old organization is no small task. Before the sale of the building closed, church volunteers went through the entire building to find all documents that were of a sensitive nature or of historical significance. All outdated employment or tax documents have been destroyed by a professional shredding service. All recent documents are being retained in secure storage as required by law. Historically significant documents and pictures have been gifted to the Multnomah University library for their archive.

In order to pursue financial transparency, the Central Bible Church leadership team paid to have a full compilation of the church financial books performed by a registered CPA firm (Finch Accounting). The CPA firm concluded that all expenditures were in line with other church closures that they have reviewed. Additionally, this full compilation has been reviewed by the 10 independent members of the Brilliance Labs Board of Directors.

FORMER CENTRAL BIBLE CHURCH MEMBERS AND LEADERS ARE LAUNCHING A NEW CHURCH IN NE PORTLAND CALLED STONE TABLE CHURCH
Stone Table Church has been slowly growing and prayerfully developing their vision for ministry. The Lord has blessed them by opening a door to a meeting space and in the Fall they will be moving to Woodland Park Chapel in NE Portland for their Sunday worship time. Stone Table Church is still in a pre-launch phase, focusing on prayer, deepening relationships, and meeting around a meal to seek God together and study his Word. BRILLIANCE LABS HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO CARRY ON THE CENTRAL BIBLE CHURCH LEGACY OF GLOBAL MISSIONS AND LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACT
The desire of both the leaders and members of Central Bible Church was for the funds from the sale of the Central Bible Church property to be invested back into the body of Christ in Portland. We believe that the best way to do this is to establish a funding platform that can provide ongoing grants for new churches and mission efforts for many years to come. By bringing together respected and diverse Christian entrepreneurs with experience in church planting, missions, and business, Brilliance Labs will seek to wisely invest the CBC funds with the goal of funding dozens of new churches and kingdom-oriented social enterprises in the city of Portland. Brilliance Labs will especially focus on funding diverse teams of leaders who are launching new works among under-resourced and multi-ethnic communities. Exciting news to share!

Update on the Sale of the Central Bible Church Property Over this last year, the reality of COVID-19 slowed down our process of finding a buyer for the CBC property....

02/04/2020

Central Bible Church plans to hold its final service on Sunday, February 23rd. The news of this closure is difficult for all involved. We will be shepherding our people through this transition in the coming months by sharing meals, meeting in homes, and processing the future as members of our community consider finding a new church home. As you reflect on the season that our church is in, please take time to pray for us. Please reach out to those you know who are affected by news of this closure and look for ways to actively care for them in the months ahead. We dearly love the people that make up Jesus’ Church and it is our hope that God will be glorified through this time of transition for our local church family.

“My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy.”

I hadn’t thought of it that way because quite frankly I’ve always consider trials to be trials and that’s all pain to me but somehow endurance to James.
Faith feels like a trial sometimes when hoping and mending aren’t going according to plan because I don’t mind planning in vain and neither did the religious peoples in the Jesus’ days
Please forgive them and us for not seeing you in everything including the good and the bad
But sometimes I feel I’ve had enough
And most times I am curious what joy looks like in this broken down kind of life
Like:
Did Jesus have it when he sweat blood in Gethsemane,
Or when his friend became his enemy,
Or when people couldn’t see who he was pointing to?

Look to the wise men they’re all rejoicing exceedingly with great joy at the star in the sky and all that it symbolized
I marvel at them who seemed to act fairly foolishly when they followed that star to Bethlehem but I guess that’s the way it works most often
Inside out and upside down with Jesus, the king as a baby birthed to a lower-middle class family
News to cause great joy for all people, but people like me are like cowardly shepherds quickly turned to praising and sharing, except I’m not quick to praise or share..I am a weak and fragile kind of shepherd terrified and
I don’t have gold, frankincense or myrrh but I am overjoyed and I am scared
I am confused and I am excited

It’s like joy’s waves wash up on my seashore soul, it’s all cleansing and it’s all joy and fear is slowly dissipating from grace like saltwater and sunshine
He is the joy to the world and when I’m scared I think of him, when I’m alone I think of him, when I am celebrating I think of him.
There is no one that has been more scared, more alone and more celebratory than the king of kings and trials produced more than endurance in him and I consider it all joy.
Birthed in a stable unable to walk and talk and eventually grown up and learned he made it to the cross and grave and resurrection and grace and forgiveness and it is all joy underneath the surface

His joy is my joy and I can have joy because he had joy and that in itself is pure joy

And I just want to get caught in those waves every day that I might be carried away to a place of unending joy
He has me all caught up and I’m catching up and trying to stay in the here and now.
Joy…it’s a wonderful thought but there are no days I haven’t fought to be redeemed from my joylessness because it only is because of my not being able to see the bigger picture
But I am beginning to trust that there is a bigger picture that seems to mutually inform joy feedback loop me back in so I might see and feel joy that’s at the center of the birth of the king who was king before he came and that is why the shepherds came and the wise men traveled all that way
Remember the joy and the messianic birth and its revolution
My brothers and sisters, rejoice exceedingly with great joy
