Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie

Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie Views are Dr. Currie’s alone. The Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie is a minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC).

A progressive Christian minister in the United Church of Christ ordained to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and university chaplain emeritus / professor emeritus at Pacific University. He has built regional and national interfaith coalitions to address critical national issues, such as homelessness, healthcare, gun violence, climate change, and immigration reform over a

thirty-year career in ministry, activism, and higher education. He most recently served as director of the Center for Peace and Spirituality, university chaplain, and assistant professor of religious studies at Pacific University. His academic work has focused on the intersection between theology and public policy. Pacific University granted Dr. Currie emeritus status as a Creighton Honoree in 2021. Dr. Currie served as the long-term interim minister at Parkrose United Church of Christ in Portland, acting minister at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Salem, and as senior minister at Sunnyside Church and University Park Church in Portland. Before entering the ministry, Dr. Currie spent 17 years working directly on homelessness and housing issues. His work included overseeing redesigns of the Multnomah County and the City of Portland service delivery systems for homeless single adults and homeless youth. Dr. Currie also played a pivotal role in opening the Goose Hollow Family Shelter and, as a member of the board of directors of the National Coalition for the Homeless, advocated for successful federal law changes that led to new protections for students experiencing homelessness in the United States. Dr. Currie writes frequent opinion pieces for national and local publications and often appears in the news for his work. In addition to providing volunteer assistance to various local and state national public policy campaigns, Dr. Currie served as a surrogate for Obama for America (2008, 2012) on faith outreach and a surrogate for Correct the Record during the 2016 election cycle. Dr. Currie earned a Master of Divinity degree at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis and a Doctor of Minister degree, focused on public theology, at The Chicago Theological Seminary. In 2021, Eden Seminary conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree on Dr. Currie. Chicago Theology Seminary presented Dr. Currie with their Distinguished Alumni Award in 2020. Dr. Currie is married to Liz Smith Currie, a senior policy advisor to the Multnomah County Chair. They have two children, Frances and Katherine, who attend Portland Public Schools. He worships at Ainsworth United Church of Christ in NE Portland.

All of us, I hope, advance the idea that the most authentic expression of Christianity models the radical non-violent message preached by Jesus himself. But God does not hate lawlessness. God hates oppression. When God called Moses to deliver God’s people from the oppression of Egypt, Moses undertook illegal acts against the state. Rome accused Jesus of acts of lawlessness. And Paul. As Dr. King led the Civil Rights Movement, he was accused of lawlessness. Sometimes fidelity to God means challenging the laws of man.

Christian minister here. Pride Month should be celebrated at…

The White House.
Every State House.
City Halls everywhere.
Libraries.
Grade schools, middle schools, and high schools.

AND Churches along with other houses of worship. It isn’t a sin to be gay. It is a sin, however, to hate on and discriminate against people simply on their sexual orientation.

Be like Jesus. Love radically. 🌈

This Pride Month, as a Christian minister, I’m aware of the hatred and vitriol directed at the LGBTQ+ community from those who claim to follow Jesus.

Such hate is incompatible with the Greatest Commandment, which tells us to love God and neighbors. Jesus called on us to free people from oppression and injustice.

Can’t you hate the sin but love the sinner?

First, worry about your own sin.

And there is nothing “loving” about discriminating against people in housing or the workplace for being gay, or in rejecting LGBTQ+ Christians from our churches.

For those in the LGBTQ+ community, know this: with you, God is well pleased. You are God’s beloved. Ignore the charlatans who say otherwise.

Donald Trump wants his name on everything. The Kennedy Center. The Justice Department. Money.

Even the Bible, which he sells and pockets the profits from- a blasphemous move from a man who rejects the teachings of Jesus and the Hebrew Prophets.

On America’s 250th, we have a president who rejects the wisdom and character of Washington and Lincoln for the autocratic ways of Putin and Kim Jong Un.

There is a reason that only 37% of Americans approve of Donald Trump’s leadership.

The lie that there are no differences between the political parties is alive. Ralph Nadar, Jill Stein, & Cornel West all campaigned on that platform. Tell it to our children and grandchildren as they deal with the ravages of climate change, women who no longer have reproductive rights, Black voters without representation, and immigrants being imprisoned and deported. It’s a claim that only the privileged and comfortable can make. I heard it from a business owner yesterday. It’s a damnable lie.

Not content with ra**ng E. Jean Carroll, Donald Trump is using the U.S. Justice Department to assault her all over again with a criminal investigation. It is all part of Trump‘s weaponization of the DOJ and campaign of retribution. This is exactly what you expect from the Trump-Epstein class: men who think they can do anything to any woman. It’s immoral. It should be illegal. It’s the definition of sin. It has to end. That is what the midterms are for. Let justice roll.

Israel has a right to exist. But Israel has no right to slaughter the Palestinian people or to occupy Gaza. The next Congress and President should make all future military aid, outside of defensive support such as the Iron Dome system, contingent on Israel’s acceptance of a two-state solution in which the Israeli and Palestinian people can both thrive free from bombs and terror. U.S. military aid and assistance should be withheld from all nations that undermine peace while trampling on human rights. Each day, the government of Benjamin Netanyahu subverts the principles on which Israel was founded. The United States should choose a different path.

Christianity should be a movement for a more just world for all, not a country club for the comfortable. Jesus said: Free the oppressed! Too many today are oppressed by poverty, climate change, gun violence, student debt, and bigotry. The church universal should follow Jesus out of the pews and into the streets. God calls us to seek a just world for all Creation.

It’s settled in the Texas U.S. Senate race: Democrat state Rep. James Talarico will face Ken Paxton, the GOP state attorney general who has faced criminal charges for corruption. Paxton is Donald Trump’s pick and has promised to back the president’s failed economic policies and war of choice with Iran without question or reservation. While Paxton’s wife divorced him on “Biblical grounds,” James Talarico is a former teacher, a member of the Texas House, and a seminarian at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The choice couldn’t be more stark. On policy and character, James Talarico is someone who will make Texas proud. I contributed to his campaign tonight and urge you to do the same at: https://jamestalarico.com.
