Seeking skilled pianist to play for weekly worship services. Peace Church of the Brethren is a small, progressive congregation located in outer Southeast Portland and online; we have weekly hybrid worship services at 11am each Sunday (attended in-person and via Zoom). The position involves accompanying worship services each Sunday, from approximately 10:45am-12:15pm, in person at the church. The church piano is a lovely Kimball 6-foot grand; it is shared with other congregations that use the church.

The normal order of service includes a prelude and postlude of the pianist's choosing, and 3-4 hymns chosen by the pastor. Occasionally the pianist will be asked to play another piece during the service, either on its own or to accompany a meditation.
The congregation welcomes all styles, but particularly appreciates joyful music.

Our congregation is friendly and informal.

The ideal candidate:
will be able to sight-read hymns; though for most services you can get the hymns several days in advance, there are occasions when the hymns will be changed or chosen on the spot.
will be able to improvise a harmony to hymns that have only the melody written down.
will be able to decide when it's appropriate to transpose a hymn up or down to meet the needs of the congregation.

The ability to play from home (over zoom) is a plus, in the event that we temporarily return to online-only services.

Besides Sundays, the pianist is also expected to play for three or four other services each year:
Christmas Eve (December 24th), in the evening
Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter), in the evening
Special services, e.g. weddings or memorial services (unpredictable—if the pianist is unavailable for a scheduled service, the pianist and pastor will work together to find a substitute)

We offer competitive rates per service, based on experience, and five paid days off per year. For days off, the pianist and pastor will work together to find a substitute.

Please direct letters of interest to [email protected], or call 503.254.6380 for more information.

"Forward together, not one step back," says the Poor People's Campaign. Though the acts of insurrection in DC on January 6th were frightening, many of us were not surprised to see the fruits of white supremacy, lies, and fear play out. We lament, we repent, we keep going in the footsteps of Jesus, teacher of the Beatitudes, healer of outcasts, caller of souls. Clear eyes, strong hearts, deep breaths of Spirit fill us for the work ahead.
For those of you in need of a deep breath, or prayer space in community, Peace Church is having our usual Thursday evening devotional time tonight at 7pm.

For more than 10 weeks, Peace Church of the Brethren has been meeting via Zoom at 11am Pacific time on Sundays. We've had more people via Zoom than an average Sunday before COVID! Our services provide an opportunity to spiritually connect and build relationships with other people, as we come out of isolation despite still staying away home. We sing, pray, share joys and concerns. We are a progressive congregation committed to following Jesus and providing inclusive space for many kinds of people. Comment here if you would like to get the link for Sunday service.
