Our theme for the series beginning March 4th is Moody March. We'll be exploring the pitfalls of changing moods and the skills the Dharma gives us to help us avoid suffering because of our moods.

Our moods can be thought of as Vedanã or feeling-tone, which can be pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, and serves as a link between sensory input and craving.

How we respond to Vedanã depends on how we identify with self, and the illusions/delusions we attach to self.

Sangharaksh*ta says, "The term 'spiritual death' may be slightly off-putting, but it isn’t meant to suggest physical death. What ‘dies’ are all our illusions and delusions about who we are and how things are."

The more we are aware of the "illusions and delusions" we attach to self, the more skilled we will be at letting those illusions/delusions die and free ourselves of moodiness.

In this series, we'll look at spiritual death, vedanã, impermanence and other aspects of Dharma that will help us address our moods.

Each month or so, we will be adding a new dimension of Dharma to explore. Each topic will overlap on some level with the previous topics as consistency and clarity in practice is beneficial to personal growth.
Last month’s Friendship topic can be coupled with Moody March as Buddha connects Spiritual Friendship with transcending negative mentals states in the Upaddhasutta: "By relying upon me as a good friend, beings subject to . . . . sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair."

Please join us beginning as we explore Moody March and the skills Dharma provides to address it.

All are welcome! There is no need to attend all sessions or to purchase a book.

With Our next series we will explore Friendship and what it means to be a friend.

Thus I have heard, on one occasion the venerable Ananda approached the Buddha and exclaimed that friendship was half of the spiritual life, that is good friendship, good companionship, good comradeship.
“Not so Ananda, not so, this is the entire spiritual life, Ananda, that is good friendship, good companionship, good comradeship.”
When a person has a good friend, it is to be expected that they will study and practice and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path together.

Essentially, friends are friends because we have the ability to think of the welfare of others as well as ourselves.

"In this age troubled by war, famine, disease, disasters, and physical and mental sufferings of all kinds, to think even for an instant of the welfare of others is of inconceivable merit.” ~ H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

Each month or so, we will be adding a new dimension of Dharma to explore.

Wishing you all a cozy, warm, and safe snow day.

Welcome all to New Beginnings
The Wednesday evening Nagaloka online meditation, and dharma discussions class returns with New Beginnings on 1/14/26. Time 6:30 to 8pm. All are welcome.

The next breath , a deepening sense of Beauty , a connection with another? A thought?
What do you want to begin in this new year?

The Human Body at Peace with Itself - Tsongkhapa

The human body, at peace with itself Is more precious than the rarest gem.
Cherish your body - it is yours this time only.
The human form is won with difficulty, It is easy to lose.
All worldly things are brief, Like lightning in the sky;
This life you must know As the tiny splash of a raindrop;
A thing of beauty that disappears even as it comes into being.
Therefore set your goal;
Make use of every day and night To achieve it.

Whether you are a master mediator or a bare beginner, please join us as each month or so, the Online Team will introduce a new topic to explore

JAN-FEB SERIES: It’s Not Out There: How to See Differently and Live an Extraordinary, Ordinary Life [book by Danapriya].

This discussion series is for anyone already familiar with meditation. We welcome beginners learning about Buddhism as well as more experienced practitioners seeking reminders and support. If you are looking for a learn-to-meditate course, please see our other offerings.

Do you want to suffer less and enjoy life more? Rather than looking outside yourself for happiness, success, and love, this book helps you look inside yourself, so life becomes more vivid, joyful and extraordinary. We can easily trip ourselves up through our thoughts, views and habits. By really taking the time – stopping, looking, feeling, being mindful – we gain a new level of awareness that radically shifts the way we see things. It’s about seeing the reality of the human predicament, seeing through the illusions that create unnecessary pain for yourself and others.

We’ll meet in-person from 1-3 pm every other Sunday:

Jan 11: pages 1-36 (please read before we meet, page may change)
Jan 25: pages 37-72
Feb 8: pages 73-104
Feb 22: pages 105-end

Our sessions will consist of a period of meditation, a short break, and then discussion of what we’ve read.

Books are available at the Nagaloka Bookstore (while supplies last…we’ve just ordered more). Amazon sells paperback and digital copies. See www.bookfinder.com for used books.

Sessions are offered on a donation basis. All funds support the non-profit Nagaloka Buddhist Center. For those who are able, the suggested donation is $20-$40 for the series. Donation options include PayPal, Venmo, and cash.

Facilitator Team: Subhramani, Dridhajyoti, and Janet

RSVP: email [email protected] to reserve your seat and receive important announcements, including schedule changes. Registration is capped at 12.

Dharmasuri will lead a Sevenfold Puja at Nagaoka on Monday, November 17th starting at 6:30 pm.
If you are new to participating in a Puja, that’s great, Dharmasuri will guide this devotional practice step by step for those attending.
The word Sevenfold Puja comes from the “Bodhicaryavatara” which means (Guide to the Path of Awakening) written by the Indian monk, Santideva. Through the seven guided reflections and visualizations of the Puja, we engage with several spiritual moods as we dedicate ourselves to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and make traditional offerings.
Simply arrive with an open mind and be ready to rehearse the role of a trainee Bodhisattva and eventually, if we persist, we will be emotionally moved by the Puja. By devotion and ritual in the Puja it means contacting, developing and expressing our highest, most refined spiritual emotions. When we are free to an open heart during Puja practice, we walk away with pleasant mental states.

Intro to Buddhism (in-person) Nov 30, 1-4pm
Explore Buddhism in this introductory course on Sunday, November 30 (1-4 pm) at the Nagaloka Buddhist Center in Portland.
Curious about Buddhism and what it can offer you? This course is suitable for those new to the topic as well those who have picked up bits over time but wonder how it all fits together.
It’s best if you have experience with meditation as we will have a short sit mid-way through the afternoon. Beginners will receive some guidance, but please attend our other events if your goal is to learn to meditate.
We’ll explore what Buddhism is and isn’t as well as the life of the historical Buddha and his primary teachings (Pali Canon). We’ll cover the ways in which buddhist teachings (doctrine) and practices evolved into various schools of Buddhist thought (Mahayana/Vajrayana and modernist) — all schools share a common goal but their emphases and practices can appear quite different. You’ll also be briefly introduced to the Nagaloka Buddhist Center and the Triratna Buddhist Community.
At the end of the day, you should have a better understanding of Buddhism and its benefits, as well how you might choose to practice it.
Volunteer teacher: Dridhajyoti (ordained in the Triratna Buddhist Community)
REGISTER: email [email protected] to reserve a space (16 available) and be notified of schedule changes.
FEES: course offered on a sliding scale donation basis. All funds support the non-profit Nagaloka Buddhist Center. For those who are able, suggested donation for the 1-session course is $10-$25. Donation options include cash, Venmo, PayPal …
