St. James Lutheran Church, Portland, Or

St. James Lutheran Church, Portland, Or As a Reconciling in Christ and Caring for Creation congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, St. All Are Welcome! St.

James welcomes people of all races, cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. James has served downtown Portland, the city and the larger region for more than 120 years. Its sandstone walls and stained glass windows have sheltered and given light to the sacramental events of individual lives: baptisms, confirmations, weddings, anniversaries, and funerals. Its ministries hav

e included the founding of a seminary (now Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley), the creation of a low income housing tower (the St. James Apartments, on the western corner of the church property), and a Foot Care Clinic. Hundreds of infants and young children have been enriched and encouraged in the St. James Child Development Center, founded in 1981. Education, social advocacy, and community involvement have grown from the thoughtful articulation of classic Lutheran biblical and theological perspectives. Parish members are drawn from a thirty mile radius to celebrate Christ’s presence in Word and Sacrament, in learning and service.
