Hanamatsuri commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama who would become the Buddha.

Hanamido Hall is decorated with fresh flowers to depict Lumbini Gardens (in what is now Nepal) where he was born. It is tradition to pour amacha (sweet tea) representing the sweet rains that fell during his birth over the statue of young Buddha.

Join us for Hanamatsuri Service this Sunday at 10:00 AM as we commemorate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha over 2,500 years ago. 🌸

The structure shown in the image, known as the Hanamido (Flower Pagoda), reflects the traditional account that flowers rained from the heavens at the time of the Buddha’s birth. Beneath the Hanamido stands a statue of the baby Buddha, over which participants gently pour sweet tea, symbolizing the sweet rain said to have showered upon him at his birth.

This ceremony allows us to honor the historical birth of the Buddha and reflect on his profound vow—to lead all beings away from suffering and toward enlightenment. It also reminds us that the Buddha was born human, experiencing the same limitations and challenges we face, yet through wisdom and compassion he transformed his life for the benefit of all beings.

Let us come together this Sunday to celebrate, pour sweet tea over the Buddha, chant the O-Daimoku, and express our gratitude for his teachings.
