Although we’re often proud of our self-sufficiency, and we celebrate the self-made individual and the independent spirit, God’s word clearly tells us that we’re wrong. It’s a lie. We can’t do it all on our own and we shouldn’t even try.

Something that consumes a great deal of our time and energy is our work… our jobs & careers, along with the related issues of wealth, ambition & striving for success. In Ecclesiastes Solomon provides some wisdom that helps us navigate this world of work & wealth & achievement.

Solomon, as The Teacher in Ecclesiastes, provides truth about futility and emptiness. But he also offers insight, wisdom, & some counsel about making better choices.

We can trust the times and seasons of our lives to God. They are in His hands. He will bring goodness and beauty from them – even the hard times – as He prepares us for Eternity in His presence.

Mother’s Day reminds us that all mothers at times need encouragement. Indeed, all of us at times need to be encouraged. And that encouragement can be found in the book of Nehemiah.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon suggests that even in the meaninglessness of life, we can experience simple pleasures like eating & drinking & working. They are gifts from God. They are not the ultimate meaning of life, but they can be & should be enjoyed.

When “The Teacher” in the book of Ecclesiastes tells us there isn’t really anything of lasting meaning here on earth, he knows what he’s talking about. He had tried it all and concluded the endeavor was just “chasing the wind”.

The book of Ecclesiastes gives a pretty grim assessment of life “under the sun” – life on this earth. Vanity of vanities. . . Utterly meaningless. . . Chasing after the wind. . . But there’s more here than just this sober pronouncement. There’s actually hope here.

Brand new series of messages through the book of Ecclesiastes begins tomorrow. I think you'll find great hope in this most unlikely of places! By the way, it takes me back 50 years when I tried my hand at composing a Christian Youth Musical called "Vanity of Vanities" (all the rage of that day). Never finished it, but I still remember the truths of Ecclesiastes. Here's one song that endured. Note: the words & music are mine; the instrumentation & vocals are AI generated. Crazy!

All believers have been given a grace gift from God to be used the body of Christ. We each have a role. And it’s important that we all put those gifts into practice.
