A Night of Darkness, A Beacon of Light: Bondi's Hanukkah Tragedy
On December 14, 2025, a celebration of light known as xanuuqah (Hanukah) was violently attacked by the darkest hate. As Sydney's Jewish community gathered at Bondi Beach for a Hanukkah festival, two Islamists opened fire, killing 15 people and wounding over 40 in a terrorist attack declared by police to be a deliberate targeting of Jews.
This horrific act did not occur in a vacuum. Community leaders called it a "predictable" tragedy, pointing to a terrifying surge in antisemitism across Australia. From synagogues set ablaze to neo-Nazi protests, a climate of increasing hostility made this attack feel, to many, like an inevitable nightmare.
We condemn the attackers, Sajid and Naveed Akram, and their pledged allegiance to Islamic State ideology, in the strongest possible terms. Their act of pure evil sought to sow fear and division.
Yet, from the chaos emerged a stunning hero. Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 40 year old bystander, instinctively tackled a gunman, disarming him while being shot himself. His act of immense bravery, driven by what his family called "pure conscience and humanity," saved countless lives and stands as a powerful rebuke to the hatred that motivated the attack.
In the face of this trauma, the Jewish community is displaying profound resilience. The very act of publicly celebrating their faith was a testament to their strength. Now, fortified by allies and an outpouring of national support, they are not retreating. They are mourning, healing, and preparing to stand taller, vowing that hatred will not dim their light or dictate their future. Their resilience is now stronger, more determined, and more united than ever before.
