Psalm 90:1-6, 10, 12, 14-17 (NIV) covers what many consider depressing -- that of the shortness of life. And yet it is meant to give wisdom, causing us to appreciate each day, each year, each person, and each gift given and received. When facing life's shortness head-on, depression is replaced with joy and thankfulness.

Psalm 50:1, 7-12, 14-15, 23 (NIV) expresses the concept that God is the owner of all things. So there is nothing we can give to God that He needs. The purpose for giving to God is for us: to reinforce our thankfulness, to give us joy, to increase our faith, and conquer our worries & doubts. As children of God, Christians give as a reflection of God's generous heart.

Exodus 20:1-17 (NIV), as the Ten Commandments, is a good starting place for discovering and following God's will for our lives. But for individual decision-making, we need more help. John Wesley shared with us these three things: "Do no harm. Do good. Attend to the Ordinances of God." Listen in for an explanation.

"The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard" found in Matthew 20:1-16 (NIV) elicited laughter when first told by Jesus, due to its' outlandish message: everyone being paid the same, regardless of their amount of work. The deeper meaning is that everyone in heaven is equal to each other, because of God's gracious nature, and everyone's unworthiness compared to God.

The Parable of the Sower and the Seed, as told by Jesus in Matthew 13:1-10, 18-23 (NIV), has a simple message often overlooked: Share the good news of Jesus with everyone, without assuming the condition of their hearts (soil). And look inward at our own heart, asking Jesus to create good soil within us.

Matthew 14:13-21 (NIV) tells of Jesus feeding the 5000+ crowd with 5 loaves of bread & 2 fish. The missed aspect of this miracle is that of Jesus allowing Himself to be vulnerable to the crowd. Jesus is teaching us that mutual vulnerability is what brings holiness to our relationships.
