Easter is over. Where do we go from here?
Jesus has just left the upper room and made it very clear that He is alive. We’ve seen the nail scars, the wounded side, the jagged marks made by a crown of thorns. We’ve also seen Him eat fish and bread, smile and laugh. We’ve heard His voice—a voice of strength that carries infinite authority and power, a voice of love that made our hearts burn, a voice that somehow makes us stronger just by hearing it. Words can’t describe how it feels to be in the same room with Him now. We thought it was amazing before, but now…
He just left, though…
The closed doors He walked through remained closed as He left the room. The Kingdom still remains a bit of a mystery. “I’ll always be with you,” He said just before leaving. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” He said as He breathed on us. Then, “Wait here for the Holy Spirit to come. For then you will have power.”
It’s all a little bit confusing, but that’s okay. We’ve been here before—confused while waiting, stunned when the waiting is over, strengthened by whatever it is we were waiting for. He knows what’s best.
But what do we do now? The tomb is empty. The Son has appeared. We are overwhelmed in worship, praising Him, expressing our affection, finding new meaning in the Scriptures. It all seems to make more sense now, but still we wait.
I think many believers can relate to this feeling after Easter. Everything that you hoped would happen on Easter happened. In fact, it went better than you thought it would. But now it’s Monday and…where do we go from here?
Go look for Jesus. Seriously. This is the time for it. Not Lent, not Holy Week—now.
This is where faith is fragile. 500 witnesses will drop to 120 worshippers in less than two months. The difference is simple: the 120 kept showing up, kept looking for Him, kept testifying about what they were experiencing. And when Pentecost came, their position and heart posture were just right.
This season is a time where Jesus can be seen everywhere if you’re looking—and nowhere if you’re distracted. Maybe it’s time for a few post-Easter traditions. Maybe try a campfire where you fry some fish (or hot dogs) and testify about Jesus and reaffirm your love for Him. Maybe get to a prayer meeting where you just testify to each other about the mighty works of God over the last year. Maybe begin a Pentecost countdown. Spend 7 weeks learning everything you can about the Holy Spirit. He is God, after all—the great follow-up Gift after the Resurrection. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. There might be more there than you or I can comprehend. We better press in.
As we reflect on His Resurrection and the gift of the Spirit, it is vital that we keep the eyes of our hearts open. Jesus is appearing everywhere. A church will continue her Easter momentum if she is filled with people who are continually looking for Jesus and testifying about what they’re seeing Him do.
You’ll find Him in the prayer meeting just as they found Him in the upper room.
You’ll find Him when you visit the lonely and forgotten, like Mary Magdalene.
You’ll find Him among the disillusioned and ashamed, like Simon Peter.
You’ll find Him in the Scriptures as you pore over them. The words on paper will come alive and become the Living Word in your heart.
You’ll find Him if you look for Him—in dreams, visions, conversations, worship, gatherings, work, family time, alone time—everywhere.
After all, He said, “I’m with you always.”
Go find Jesus.
