What is the goal of spiritual maturity? Is it to grow in the function and frequency of spiritual gifts? Is it to simply say “no” to unhelpful or unhealthy things, and “yes” to helpful and healthy ones? Or is there more to it than this?

Ephesians 4:13-15 - “And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for works for ministry and to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.”

There’s a popular thought in our culture today that the ultimate goal in life is our own happiness. Scripture tells another story however: that true, absolutely sustainable happiness is actually not possible in this age. The good news is, one day it will be. And more importantly, rather than our own happiness; it is God who calls us to a far greater pursuit in this life: holiness.

1st Pt. 13-18 - Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

We all have a story. It comes full of highs and lows, wins and losses, and everything in between. What’s truly amazing is when we invite God into our lives, he has the ability and the desire to re-write our story and place our lives in an entirely new context. And when we find ourselves in the most dire of circumstances, God is ready to show up so that when we look back, we can say: “…but God…”
