Sept. 6, 2026 Sunday:

Sermon Text: Mt 18:15-20

Sermon Summary:

Jesus teaches us that conflict is inevitable even in a Christian community, but conflict does not have to destroy the church. Instead of gossiping, backbiting, attacking, or complaining about someone behind that person’s back, Jesus tells us to speak directly and honestly with one another and, when necessary, seek the help of others in resolving the conflict. Just as vaccines help protect us from diseases, honest and loving communication can serve as a kind of spiritual vaccine against the anger, gossip, resentment, and division that damage a Christian community. As followers of Jesus, we are called not simply to prove that we are right, but to speak the truth in love, treating one another with honesty, kindness, and respect.

Questions for Reflection:

1. When I have a conflict or disagreement with someone, do I speak directly to that person with honesty and love, or am I tempted to complain about them to others?

2. What can I personally do to help make our church a community where people “speak the truth in love” and treat one another with kindness, honesty, and respect?

When anxieties rise, we can turn to spiritual practices that connect us to God, who is with us, takes care of us, and relieves us of stress.

Bible Text: Matthew 16:21-28
Sermon Summary:

Jesus calls us not simply to believe in him, but to follow him: to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and live according to his way of love. In a world that often prizes winning, success, and self-interest, Jesus invites us to a different way of life. The paradox of Christian faith is that when we let go of ego, selfish ambition, and the need to put ourselves first, we discover a richer and more meaningful life. Winning is good, but being kind, courageous, and helpful is better.

Questions for Reflection

What is one thing—my ego, comfort, security, ambition, or desire to be right—that I may need to let go of in order to follow Jesus more faithfully?

When doing what is right comes with a personal cost, am I willing to take up my cross and choose kindness, courage, and compassion over my own self-interest?
