We had a great first day of "Do Something Superheroes" Vacation Bible School! Today's Bible hero is Miriam, who demonstrated heart power by bravely protecting her baby brother Moses. Thank you to the Ozaukee Central Fire Department for being Monday's community heroes and giving us a tour of the ambulance. Check out some pictures from the day!

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading from Matthew 9, the religious leaders criticize Jesus for spending time with sinners and even (gasp!) eating with them. Jesus responds, “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners.” How often do we fall into the trap of thinking we need to be “good enough” to come into God’s presence? Maybe you've heard people say, “If I step into the door of the church, the roof will collapse!”

But sinners are exactly who Jesus is seeking. Jesus calls no one but sinners! And he invites them (us!) to follow, to leave behind our sin and receive forgiveness and new life. Good news indeed! Join us at 8:30 for worship here at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Port Washington.

We welcome the newest congregation in our synod, Breaking the Chains Church-Greater Milwaukee Synod, a church which walks in mutual ministry with incarcerated men at the Felmers Chaney and Kenosha Correctional Centers, together seeking to transform lives empowered by the Good News of Jesus. You might remember Breaking the Chains from last year’s hygiene kit VBS service project.

Today is Ascension Day, 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection on Easter. Join us this Sunday at 8:30 as we dig into this strange but important story.

Join us in prayer as we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord.

Almighty God, your blessed Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things. Mercifully give us faith to trust that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth to the end of time, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. —Bread for the Day

A blessing for Mother’s Day:
May you know that God is with you if you are like Tamar, struggling with infertility, or a miscarriage.

May you know that God is with you if you are like Rachel, counting the women among your family and friends who year by year and month by month get pregnant while you wait.

May you know that God is with you if you are like Naomi, and have known the bitter sting of a child's death.

May you know that God is with you if you are like Joseph and Benjamin, and your Mom has died.

May you know that God is with you if your relationship with your Mom was marked by trauma, abuse, or abandonment, or she just couldn't parent you the way you needed.

May you know that God is with you if you've been like Moses' mother and put a child up for adoption, trusting another family to love your child into adulthood.

May you know that God is with you if you've been like Pharaoh's daughter, called to love children who are not yours by birth, (and thus the mother who brought that child into your life, even if it is complicated).

May you know that God is with you if you, like many, are watching (or have watched) your mother age, and disappear into the long goodbye of dementia or Alzheimers.

May you know that God is with you if you, like Mary, are pregnant for the very first time and waiting breathlessly for the miracle of your first child.

May you know that God is with you if your children have turned away from you, painfully closing the door on relationship, leaving holding your broken heart in your hands. And like Hagar, now you are mothering alone.

May you know that God is with you if motherhood is your greatest joy and toughest struggle all rolled into one.

May you know that God is with you if you are watching your child battle substance abuse, a public legal situation, mental illness, or another situation which you can merely watch unfold.

May you know that God is with you in you like so many women before you do not wish to be a mother, are not married, or in so many other ways do not fit into societal norms.

May you know that God is with you if you see yourself reflected in all, or none of these stories.

This mother's day, wherever and whoever you are, we walk with you. Your are loved. You are seen. You are worthy.

And may you know the deep love without end of our big, wild, beautiful God who is the very best example of a parent that we know. Amen
