Dear Church Family,
This evening we begin our first lesson for Heritage Days 2026. We are studying John Calvin as a Son of the Church. Calvin was shaped not only by the people of his generation but also by Christians of earlier generations. In his Institutes of the Christian Religion he was eager to show what he had learned from earlier Christians as a Bible scholar, theologian, and pastor.
Among the his cited authorities from previous generations was Ambrose of Milan. This evening Calvin is going to introduce us to Ambrose's life and works. Then he is going to hand the mic to Pastor Owen to fill in the details. Pastor Owen will have coloring sheets for the younger children who may enjoy a visual aid while they listen. Before you leave be sure to pick up the summary sheet to take home for your family to discuss later in the week in family worship or around the dinner table.
Pizza and salad will be available in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00pm. We are asking for help to offset the cost ($2 per individual; $5 for a family of three or more).
We will meet in the Sanctuary at 6:30 for prayer and our lesson.
I look forward to learning with you!
In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Owen

Join us as we discuss: The U in TULIP, unconditional election.

Topics considered include:

● God’s Eternal Decree (WCF III)

● Election

○ Conditional–Jacob Arminius
■ Foreknowledge interpreted as God looking from eternity into time to see who will believe and persevere in faith and then, based on that knowledge, choosing them.
■ God’s choice is based on man’s choice. Future faith and perseverance are the conditions for election.
○ Corporate
■ God chose Israel as a nation
■ God chose the Church as a body, but not the individual members of the body.
■ God chose believers but He did not choose who would believe. God predestined believers to be adopted and conformed to Christ but He did not choose who would believe.
○ Unconditional–John Calvin, Three Forms of Unity, Westminster Standards
■ God chooses individuals unto salvation (the elect)
■ God’s choice is not based on man’s choice or merit but on God’s good pleasure
■ Supralapsarian–double predestination; decree of election and reprobation; followed by decree of the fall of man
■ Infralapsarian–decree of election of some while passing over the rest; before the decree of the fall of man

● Romans 9:10-23

● Ephesians 1:3-14

● But what about foreknowledge?

○ Romans 8:29
○ 1 Peter 1:2
○ Not “what He foreknew” but “whom He did foreknow”
■ This is not factual knowledge like you would find on a data sheet. God has that kind of knowledge of everyone.
■ This is personal knowledge of ownership or acknowledgment, like when a father shows up at practice and says, “He’s mine.” He is acknowledging that boy as his son.
■ 2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His.
■ Amos 3:2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth.
○ The comfort of God’s foreknowledge is that God acknowledged us as His children before time began. He has owned us as His children and heirs before we did anything good or bad.
○ It is not about God foreseeing what we would or would not do. Rather, it is about God acknowledging us as His dear children before we acknowledged Him as our God and Father.
● If T then U
● The comfort of God’s people
● The humility of God’s people
● The stimulus for evangelism and missions
● The glory of God’s grace and righteousness

And this belongs unto the establishment of our faith, that he [the Holy Spirit] who prepared, sanctified, and glorified the human nature, the natural body of Jesus Christ, the head of the church, hath undertaken to prepare, sanctify, and glorify his mystical body, or all the elect given unto him of the Father.
John Owen, Pneumatologia, 2.5

Next to the happiness of our souls, and the church of God, we should desire the happiness of our seed, that those who come of us may be praising God on earth when we are praising Him in heaven.—Matthew Henry

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
(Psalm 84:10)

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after;
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
(Psalm 27:4)

As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
So panteth my soul after thee, O God.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:
When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalm 42:1–2)
