Day 19: 1 Corinthians 11: 1-16. Some of you may have been in traditions which insisted that women cover their head in church.
One of St. Paul's emphases in this passage was that despite our "Freedom / Equality" in Christ, the Church needed to reflect the modesty standards of the culture.
For those wondering about those Angels in verse 10, Paul was probably referring to the Genesis verse posted below.
And note - both women and men prayed and prophesied in the Assembly!
And notice the "Nevertheless" in verse 11 which shifts the argument back to the interdependence of men and women rather than a hierarchy.

First Corinthians 11:1-16

1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.

13 Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? 15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.

16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

Day 16: 1 Corinthians 10: 1-22. An interesting thing to note - Paul uses Old Testament examples to prove his point - since that was Holy Scripture for him. Even though the Corinthian Church was mostly "Greeks", there were enough converts from a Jewish background to be able to fill in the details of these stories.

Welcome back to a series of daily inspired by 1 Corinthians.

In Chapter 10 Paul writes about temptation.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
(‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

My Life Application Bible provides this commentary. “Paul gave strong encouragement to the Corinthians about temptation. He said
1) Wrong desires and temptations happen to everyone, so don’t feel you’ve been singled out.
2) Others have resisted temptation, and so can you.
3) Any temptation can be resisted because God will help you resist it.

God helps you resist temptation by helping you
1) Recognize those people and situations that give you trouble
2) Run for anything you know is wrong
3) Choose to do only what is right
4) Pray for God’s help
5) Seek friends who love God and can offer help when you are tempted.”

Friend, God is our strength and protection. Let’s pray for the Holy Spirit to fill our thought life and heart. Look to Jesus when temptation knocks on the door.

That is the hope you need today!

Day 11: 1 Corinthians 7: 17-24. This passage was written with the belief that Jesus was coming soon. I do not believe that we should never change or try to better where we are in life. However, what we can take from it is that God accepts us and we can still serve God where ever or who ever we are. Don't use it as an excuse!

And don’t be wishing you were someplace else or with someone else. Where you are right now is God’s place for you. Live and obey and love and believe right there. 1 Corinthians 7:17
