Black History Looks Like Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church

Honoring Mr. Frank McGriggs Sr.

Black history looks like vision.
Black history looks like faith.
Black history looks like Mr. Frank McGriggs Sr.

Recognized as one of the oldest living pillars in Claiborne County, Mr. McGriggs represents a generation that turned hard soil into hope. Alongside his father, he was a Black farmer during a time when ownership, production, and independence required courage. They did not just plant corn β€” they processed it. They made cornmeal. They fed families. They sustained community.

Their story, remembered in the book I Ain’t Lying, stands as testimony to Black excellence rooted in land, labor, and legacy. Farming was not just work β€” it was dignity. It was self-sufficiency. It was determination in the face of barriers.

But his legacy does not stop in the fields.

Black history also looks like vision for the future. Mr. Frank McGriggs Sr. had the foresight and faith to help move Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church forward β€” envisioning the new structure that we now worship in today. What once was a smaller building became a growing ministry because someone could see beyond the present moment.

From the cornfields to the church house, his life bridges generations.

Black history is not just something we read.
It is something we live.
It is something we build.

Black History Looks Like Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church β€”
and it looks like Mr. Frank McGriggs Sr.

BLACK HISTORY LOOKS LIKE
Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church

As we close this month of tributes, we pause with grateful hearts.

Each post was written as a 90-second read not to tell a full life story, but to honor lives that helped shape our church and our community.

The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1,
β€œWe are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses.”

We believe that cloud includes the faithful members of Mercy Seat the mothers, deacons, teachers, singers, workers, and prayer warriors who paved the way.

If you would like your loved one’s full story told, please feel free to leave a note beneath their picture so their legacy can continue to speak.

If we unintentionally missed someone, we sincerely apologize. This series was never meant to offend or overlook anyone only to celebrate the rich history Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church has carried across Claiborne County.

Because Black history is not just something we read.
It is something we lived.
It is something we built.
And it is something we are still writing.

And as long as Mercy Seat stands,
their faith will never be forgotten.

Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church

Black history looks like Ada Ratliff.

At Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church, history is not just written in books it is written in the lives of faithful servants who helped keep the church standing through prayer, sacrifice, and steady commitment.

Ada Ratliff represents that quiet strength.

She has served as the CEO of Claiborne County Medical Center since 2018, leading with integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to community health. Beyond her role in healthcare leadership, she also serves with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team in Southwest Mississippi, answering the call during times of crisis and helping families when they need it most. Her dedication to service, leadership, and people continues to make a lasting impact across our community.

She is part of the generation that understood the value of the church not just as a building, but as a refuge, a school of faith, and the heartbeat of the community. Through worship, service, and unwavering dedication, she helped support the mission and legacy of Mercy Seat.

The Board of Trustees of Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church proudly pauses to honor her life and contribution. Her faithfulness reflects the spirit of Black women who prayed the church through hard seasons, stood firm in uncertain times, and helped lay foundations for the generations that followed.

Black history looks like commitment.
Black history looks like perseverance.
Black history looks like Ada Ratliff.

Today we celebrate her legacy β€” because others paved the way, and because Mercy Seat stands stronger today due to saints like her.

Honoring Doctor Cardell Williams

Black history looks like steady leadership.

Black history looks like service that leaves a mark.

We honor οΏΌ Doctor Cardell Williams, former Superintendent of the Claiborne County School District in Port Gibson for his commitment to education in Claiborne County.

In a rural Mississippi community where resources are often limited but expectations remain high, leadership in education requires courage, vision, and persistence. Serving as superintendent meant carrying the responsibility of students, teachers, budgets, policies, and the future of the entire district.

But his service did not stop at the school doors.

At Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church, he also serves as a Deacon and Board of Trustees member helping strengthen both the spiritual life and structural foundation of the church. That kind of dual service reflects dedication not just to a position, but to people.

Black history is not only about moments in the spotlight.
It is about consistent leadership.
It is about faithfulness over time.
It is about investing in community and church alike.

Black history looks like commitment.
Black history looks like Claiborne County.
Black history looks like Cardell Williams.

Honoring Diane Davaul
Claiborne County, Mississippi

Black history is not only found in the past it is happening right now.

Black history looks like Diane Davaul.

In Claiborne County, leadership takes many forms. Some lead from pulpits. Some lead from classrooms. Some lead from offices where decisions impact every family in the county.

As Tax Assessor and Collector, Diane Davaul serves in a role that helps sustain our community supporting schools, roads, emergency services, and the daily operations that keep Claiborne County moving forward. Her work requires accountability, organization, and commitment to the people.

That kind of service matters.

At Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church, we recognize that public service done with integrity is a form of ministry. It reflects responsibility. It reflects stewardship. It reflects dedication to community.

Black history looks like women who step into leadership and carry it well.
Black history looks like steady hands and strong minds.

Today, we honor Diane Davaul for her service and her role in helping guide Claiborne County forward.

MERCY LOOKS LIKE BLACK HISTORY

Honoring Minister Marvin Ratliff, Sr.

Mercy looks like Black history.

It looks like the doors of Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church standing open through generations through segregation, struggle, storms, and seasons of uncertainty. It looks like prayer that sustained a people when resources were limited but faith was strong.

Mercy looks like service beyond the pulpit.

It looks like Minister Marvin Ratliff, Sr. preaching hope on Sunday and helping protect his community throughout the week. In Claiborne County, service means more than words. It means preparation. It means responsibility. It means standing ready.

As Mississippi’s nuclear host county, readiness connected to Grand Gulf Nuclear Station is essential. Emergency management means planning before storms arrive, coordinating response before crisis strikes, and protecting families before headlines ever form.

Black history here is active.
It is leadership.
It is stewardship.
It is faith in action.

BLACK HISTORY LOOKS LIKE
MERCY SEAT MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

Today we pause to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Rev. Jackson was a preacher, a leader, and a voice for justice. He stood for faith. He stood for fairness. He stood for the people.

This month, as we reflect on his passing in 2026, we thank God for his life and the doors he helped open for so many.

In the book Thunder in America, which tells the story of his 1984 campaign, there is a special connection to us. Our own church member, Celia Anderson, was pictured during that historic moment.

That reminds us that Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church has always been part of history. We have prayed. We have stood strong. We have been present.

πŸ“– β€œI have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
β€” 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

We extend our condolences to all who mourn.
May we continue to walk in faith and stand for what is right.
