PAGNINILAY: MAY 14, 2026

Amen.

Divine Mercy Sunday, a time to obtain a Plenary Indulgence 🙏

On the Second Sunday of Easter—instituted by Pope John Paul II as Divine Mercy Sunday—the faithful are invited to trust deeply in Christ’s mercy and may obtain a plenary indulgence, applicable either to themselves or to the souls in purgatory.

According to the Church’s teaching (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church §§1471–1479), a plenary indulgence is the full remission of temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. It does not replace the Sacrament of Confession, but flows from God’s mercy through the Church. It does not “guarantee” immediate entry into Heaven unless one is fully disposed and free from all attachment to sin.

This devotion is closely tied to the revelations received by Saint Faustina Kowalska, in which Jesus emphasized His desire to pour out abundant graces upon souls who trust in Him:

“The soul that goes to Confession and receives Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment…”
(Diary of St. Faustina, 699)

Requirements for a Plenary Indulgence
The Church, through the Apostolic Penitentiary, outlines the following:

Usual Conditions:
* Sacramental Confession (within about 20 days before or after)
* Reception of Holy Communion
* Prayer for the intentions of the Pope
* Complete detachment from all sin, even venial

Specific to Divine Mercy Sunday:
* Participate in prayers and devotions in honor of Divine Mercy (such as the Chaplet) or
* In the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., “Jesus, I trust in You”)

A Final Note
This beautiful gift of grace is not merely about fulfilling requirements, but about a sincere conversion of heart—trusting in the infinite mercy of Christ and extending that mercy to others.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7).
