MELCHIZEDEK A PICTURE OF JESUS
Hebrews 7:1–10, 2026-01-25
Intro.
In Chapter 7 of Hebrews, we are presented with a picture of Christ from the Old Testament, who is Melchizedek.
There are many pictures of Christ given to us in the Old Testament Scriptures that point to the coming Messiah like Adam, Abel, Noah’s Ark, Jacob’s Ladder, Isaac, and Joseph, and many more.
Let’s look at one example, before we look at Melchizedek. In Numbers Chapter 21, we are told that the Israelites spoke against God and against Moses. Here is what they said.
*Numbers 21:5-9 "Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?" they complained. "There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this horrible manna!"
6 So the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died. 7 Then the people came to Moses and cried out, "We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take away the snakes." So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Then the Lord told him, "Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!" NLT
The Bronze snake that Moses made was a picture of Jesus. But you may say that sounds really strange, but we know that the bronze snake is a picture of Jesus because of what Jesus taught us in John Chapter 3.
*John 3:14 …As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. NLT
The bronze snake was a picture of Christ dying on the cross for our sins. If you look to Him in faith, He will save you.
There are many more pictures like this of Christ in the Old Testament.
As we study them, we need to remember that all of them are frail, inferior illustrations of Christ, because nothing on earth can ever fully reveal the divine character and work of Christ.
They are only shadows, signs, and pictures pointing to the real Christ. Jesus had to come to earth because He was the only one who could fully reveal God to us.
But God gave us these pictures of the Messiah so we could know who Christ would be and what He would do.
Melchizedek is one of these pictures and in Chapter 7 of Hebrews, the Holy Spirit uses Melchizedek to demonstrate why Jesus is superior to Abraham and the Levitical priesthood of the Old Covenant that God gave through Moses.
Jesus is the mediator of a new and far better covenant and His priesthood is far better than the priesthood of the Old Covenant. His sacrifice was far better than all the sacrifices of all the priests of the Old Covenant.
Now we believe, that during the time of the writing of the letter to the Hebrews there was a great persecution of Hebrew Christians and some may have even returned to following the Old Covenant to avoid that persecution.
So, the writer of Hebrews demonstrates how foolish this is by reminding his readers that the Old Covenant became obsolete when Jesus inaugurated the New and better Covenant.
It would be a terrible tragedy to leave the New Covenant of Christ and return to the Old Covenant that was made obsolete by Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
The Holy Spirit uses Melchizedek as a picture of Christ to prove all of this. After all, it was the Holy Spirit who orchestrated the events of Melchizedek’s life that made him a picture of Christ.
In Hebrews Chapter 6, we are told that Jesus entered the inner sanctuary of God in heaven and offered His life blood on the altar of God, for our sins, once for all time.
In doing that, He became our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
TS Now in Chapter 7, Hebrews explains why Melchizedek is superior to Abraham and the Old Covenant priesthood and therefor a picture of Christ.
*Hebrews 7:1 This Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High. NLT
*1. MELCHIZEDEK IS BOTH KING AND PRIEST.
Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem which means city of peace. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Melchizedek was at the same time a priest of God Most High.
Under the Old Covenant, the priesthood was subject to the kings of Israel.
But Melchizedek is both king and High Priest. He is therefore superior to the priests of the Old Covenant.
He is therefore a picture of Christ, who is both our King and High Priest.
*Zechariah 6:13 (Speaking of the Messiah) he will receive royal honor and will rule as king from his throne. He will also serve as priest from his throne NLT
TS Another reason why Melchizedek is superior to Abraham and the Old Covenant priesthood and therefor a picture of Christ.
*2. MELCHIZEDEK’S PRIESTHOOD IS UNIVERSAL.
He is “a priest of God Most High” (El Elyon) which is a name of God that identifies Him as the God of the whole earth, not just one nation.
So, Melchizedek is a universal priest. His priesthood has no limits.
The priests of the Old Covenant were restricted to one nation (Israel).
So, we see the similarity to Christ, because Jesus is the Savior of the whole world, not just one nation.
*"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. NLT John 3:16
(Jesus is) The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NLT John 1:29
TS Here’s a third reason why Melchizedek is superior to Abraham and the Old Covenant priesthood and therefor a picture of Christ.
*3. MELCHIZEDEK WAS GREATER THAN ABRAHAM.
*Hebrews 7:1 When Abraham was returning home after winning a great battle against the kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him. 2 Then Abraham took a tenth of all he had captured in battle and gave it to Melchizedek. NLT
(Go to Genesis 14:1-20 to find more information.)
*Hebrews 7:4 Consider then how great this Melchizedek was. Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognized this by giving him a tenth of what he had taken in battle. 5 Now the law of Moses required that the priests, who are descendants of Levi, must collect a tithe from the rest of the people of Israel, who are also descendants of Abraham. 6 But Melchizedek, who was not a descendant of Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham. And Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promises of God. 7 And without question, the person who has the power to give a blessing is greater than the one who is blessed. NLT
Skip to verse 9.
*Hebrews 7:9 In addition, we might even say that these Levites—the ones who collect the tithe—paid a tithe to Melchizedek when their ancestor Abraham paid a tithe to him. 10 For although Levi wasn't born yet, the seed from which he came was in Abraham's body when Melchizedek collected the tithe from him. NLT
Melchizedek was greater than Abraham and greater than the priests of the Old Covenant.
So again, we see the similarity to Christ. Christ was greater than Abraham and greater than the priests of the Old Covenant.
*John 8:57 So the Jews said to him (Jesus), “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, ESV
Jesus demonstrated that He was greater than Abraham because He existed before Abraham.
TS Here’s the finial reason why Melchizedek is superior to Abraham and the Old Covenant priesthood and therefor a picture of Christ.
*4. MELCHIZEDEK’S PRIESTHOOD IS ETERNAL.
Hebrews 7:3 There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors—no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God. NLT
Skip to verse 8
*Hebrews 7:8 The priests who collect tithes are men who die, so Melchizedek is greater than they are, because we are told that he lives on. NLT
Now I don’t believe the Scripture is saying that Melchizedek was eternal.
What I do believe is that the Holy Spirit intentionally left out the information about his parents and his birth and his death so he would resemble the Son of God, who in reality had no beginning or end.
The Holy Spirit is the author of all Scripture so what He puts in is significant and what He leaves out is significant.
Now, look at what the Spirit teaches us about Jesus.
*John 1:1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. NLT
The Word is Jesus and so He is without beginning or end because He is God.
*HERE’S THE CHALLENGE:
Since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. NLT, Hebrews 4:14-16
