Last week, we learned of the sudden passing of Dean Corgey, Seafarers' International Union Vice President. Dean was a great friend to Seafarers and Seafarers' Centers. Apostleship of the Sea - Diocese of Beaumont and the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center benefited from his assistance for seafarers in many ways over the decades. On Thursday, June 4, his SIU Brother, Fr Sinclair Oubre visited the Houston Hall and led those there in a Memorial Service for Dean. Fr Sinclair was deeply honored to do this for his longtime friend. Please join us in prayers for the repose of his soul, and for his family, friends and colleagues who were left to mourn him.

This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re honoring labor leaders who embody union solidarity.

Shwe Aung is a union leader with Seafarers International Union who has spent his career standing up for workers in the maritime industry.

Early in his career, he helped organize Burmese workers and assisted the International Transport Federation with recovering stolen wages. He was blacklisted and threatened with imprisonment for his labor activism. After being granted asylum in the U.S., Shwe trained to become an ITF inspector and now looks out for workers along the Texas Gulf Coast.

This month and every month, we honor Shwe Aung for his commitment to workers everywhere.

On this Feast Day of Brendan the Navigator, Bishop Toups of the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont gathered people from the Diocese at River Front Park to bless the waterway as Hurricane Season begins. He prayed for the safety of all people and their homes and businesses. He also reminded everyone to pray for Seafarers who brings the goods we need.

Today is the Feast of St. Brendan the Navigator. With so many of our US Merchant Marine cadets and midshipmen testing for their license right now, let us raise intercessions to St. Brendan the Navigator, Servant of God Captain Leonard La Rue, and Our Lady Star of the Sea for peace and wisdom during their testing.

Also, here is a discussion from Jonathan Pageau and Richard Rohlin about the symbolic meaning of the voyages of St. Brendan.

This episode is part of our miniseries of Universal History episodes focused on Ireland. We talk about the voyage of St. Brendan the Navigator, one of the my...
