Covering a Multitude of Sins

Sin becomes infectious. It spreads like a cancer in our bodies. It does not just stop in one place. It gets deeper and deeper. It starts taking over more and more areas of life. That is why restoration matters. When someone brings back a sinner from his wandering, James says it will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

We know that as followers of Christ, we are eternally secure in Christ (Romans 8:38-39), so this is not a loss of salvation death that James is referring to. Rather, James is talking about that dying inside you and I feel as we permit sin to run our lives and we drift further away from God. This is the death of the loss of intimacy with God, whom we were created and born again to have an intimate relationship with. Furthermore, if permitted, the sin spreads, taking more and more control of the believer's life, and spreading to others.

In light of all this, what a reward to help bring a brother or sister back from this death and stop the spread of sin from overwhelming their life! What greater joy than helping someone regain intimate relationship with God?!? What greater joy than seeing that fire relit within them?!?

When a brother or sister wanders into sin, the goal is not to remove the person or to say, “Look how far they have fallen.” or even to try and protect ourselves by pushing them away. What if we brought health and reconciliation? What if that person became a catalyst for even greater health within the body?

We ALL are ambassadors for Christ. God makes His appeal through us. We are all called to implore one another on behalf of Christ to be fully reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:20-21). Not just pastors. Not just elders. Not just people with leadership titles. Each and every one of us has the opportunity to lovingly lean in and help bring someone back.

Who might God be asking me to lovingly come alongside— to help restore and bring their soul back from death and cover a multitude of sins?

Restore With Gentleness

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.
Galatians 6:1

We are lovingly called to be our brother’s and sister’s keeper. But we do not want to be sin sniffers. We do not need to be looking for everybody’s shortcomings. We are not called to walk around trying to catch people falling short. The heart is restoration.

When a brother or sister has been deceived and wandered from the truth, we are to come alongside them well. We are to pray for the. We are to pray for wisdom, discernment, gentleness on how the Lord desires for us to respond. We are to speak the truth in love. We follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We go to them not with condemnation, not with judgment, not with self-righteous enjoyment, but with a spirit of gentleness.

You and I get to be in the restoration business of a fellow believer’s life with Christ. What an awesome privilege that is! But we also need keep watch on ourselves. We can be tempted toward gossip. We can be tempted toward slander. We can be tempted to feel holier than thou. We can be tempted to lose our cool. We can be tempted to speak truth with more truth but completely absent of love. Truth without love is not restoration.

Jesus’ heart as reflected in Matthew 18 is to win back a brother who sins against us. James' heart in James 5 is to win back a brother who has wandered from the truth they know. The heart is to bring reconciliation, unity, and to make the body whole.

When you see someone wandering, is your first instinct restoration—or is it criticism, gossip, and/or self-righteousness?

Final Painting Day - This Saturday @9:30AM

The church is looking great! The Old Chapel and Fellowship Hall are all painted, and we only have a little bit left on the Sanctuary to complete this project. A BIG thank you to the 40 of you all who have supported our major painting project this summer. Lord willing, we will wrap up this project on Saturday morning.

Wandering From the Truth

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back…
James 5:19

James talks about a brother or sister who wanders from the truth. That wandering is more than just drifting aimlessly. It has the idea of being deceived, being led astray from the truth. Sin deceives. Sin entices. Sin brings about death.

James already told us that each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin. And sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

For the follower of Christ, sin does not separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Praise the Lord for that. Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from His love.But sin does bring death into our spiritual life. There is a death in our intimacy with God. There is a hollowness, an emptiness, a sense that something is not quite right.

Our soul cries out for God as a deer pants after water. Our actions might not be thirsting after God, but our soul knows what will actually satisfy us. So today, ask honestly: have I wandered from the truth in any area? Have I been led astray by my flesh, by Satan, or by my own desires? The invitation is not condemnation. The invitation is restoration.
