This morning I said, “James Brown, I need one good picture to help you get adopted,” and apparently he took that very seriously. He hopped into the kiddie pool (no water needed), looked right at me, and said, “Here you go!”

He is friendly, goofy, and clearly willing to do whatever it takes to find a home.

Come make his “I understood the assignment” moment worth it.

After 4 straight days of multiple stranding calls, we finally had a quiet day today. But after we posted the two turtles yesterday, we responded to a third one at SeaWalk Pavilion. Like all the others, this was a juvenile green. But unlike the others, this animal had FP tumors (circled in red).

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a debilitating infectious disease. Turtles with FP have external tumors that may grow so large and hanging as to hamper swimming, vision, feeding, and potential escape from predators. These lesions have been reported in all sea turtle species except leatherbacks. For an unknown reason, the frequency of FP is much higher in green turtles than in other species. Surgical removal of FP tumors is the most common treatment method.

If you find a stranded turtle (live or deceased) in Atlantic, Neptune or Jax Beach, call our hotline at 904-613-6081. All other areas can call FWC at 888-404-3922 (*FWC). Do not put it back in the ocean because it needs to be medically assessed.

All marine turtle activities are conducted by authorized personnel under MTP-111.

During the next three Saturdays, December 9th, 16th, and 30th, the St. Augustine Humane Society (aka Santa's North Pole Workshop) will be accepting donations for our Pet Food Pantry from noon until 2:00 p.m. at 1665 Old Moultrie Road, complete with candy canes and holiday music.

Because our pet pantry's inventory is extremely low, we ask the community to help us restock our pet food pantry for the holiday season and begin the year with a better-stocked pantry.

Donations may be dropped off under our pavilion at any time or mailed to:
St. Augustine Humane Society
1665 Old Moultrie Rd.
St. Augustine 32084

If you or someone you know is having challenges providing for their pets, please tell them about the self-service Pet Food Pantry. Our Pet Food Pantry distributes over 2,000 pounds of pet food monthly to families every Friday under our pavilion.
