The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

As the story goes, in 1972, a young Egyptian businessman lost his wristwatch, valued at roughly $11,000.

An old Egyptian garbage collector, one of the poorest among the poor, a Coptic Christian, returned the watch. He explained, “My Christ told me to be honest unto death.”

The businessman replied, “I do not know this Christ, but I see Him in you. Because of what you have done and by your example, I will worship the Christ that you worship.”

True to his word, the businessman studied the Bible and grew in his faith. He and his wife began ministering to the poor who live and work in the piles of refuse outside Cairo known as Garbage City.

Today, that businessman, Father Sam’an, leads the largest church of believers in the Middle East.

Imagine this type of sacrifice in the context of a marriage. In John 12:24, Jesus said “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Love grows from our daily choices to “die every day” (1 Corinthians 15:31). You plant an $11,000 Rolex in the dirt and out of it grows the largest church in the Middle East.

My willingness to “die” daily in my marriage could produce beautiful fruit—even if I don’t see it.

My “buried Rolex” might be doing the dishes when I don’t feel like it. Or getting up 15-30 minutes earlier to read God’s Word. It means in the heat of an argument, giving my spouse a blessing (Honey, I hear you. I’m sorry I did that) instead of a curse (Really?! Well, you …!). It is saying no to my wants and yes to the needs of my spouse.

One small act of obedience has the potential to produce a lifetime of fruit.

THE GOOD STUFF: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21)

Action points: How will you serve Christ by serving another? What small act of kindness or sacrifice can you do today to honor God’s Son and anticipate the reward?

Nightbirde used to be a worship leader and she’s graduated from Liberty U. She became well known after her receiving the golden buzzer after singing her own original song “It’s Okay” on America’s Got Talent. Here’s her story:

“After the doctor told me I was dying, and after the man I married said he didn’t love me anymore, I chased a miracle in California and sixteen weeks later, I got it. The cancer was gone. But when my brain caught up with it all, something broke. I later found out that all the tragedy at once had caused a physical head trauma, and my brain was sending false signals of excruciating pain and panic.
I am God’s downstairs neighbor, banging on the ceiling with a broomstick. I show up at His door every day. Sometimes with songs, sometimes with curses. Sometimes apologies, gifts, questions, demands. Sometimes I use my key under the mat to let myself in. Other times, I sulk outside until He opens the door to me Himself.
I have called Him a cheat and a liar, and I meant it. I have told Him I wanted to die, and I meant it. Tears have become the only prayer I know. Prayers roll over my nostrils and drip down my forearms. They fall to the ground as I reach for Him. These are the prayers I repeat night and day; sunrise, sunset.
Call me bitter if you want to—that’s fair. Count me among the angry, the cynical, the offended, the hardened. But count me also among the friends of God. For I have seen Him in rare form. I have felt His exhale, laid in His shadow, squinted to read the message He wrote for me in the grout: “I’m sad too.”
If an explanation would help, He would write me one—I know it. But maybe an explanation would only start an argument between us—and I don’t want to argue with God. I want to lay in a hammock with Him and trace the veins in His arms.
I remind myself that I’m praying to the God who let the Israelites stay lost for decades. They begged to arrive in the Promised Land, but instead He let them wander, answering prayers they didn’t pray. For forty years, their shoes didn’t wear out. Fire lit their path each night. Every morning, He sent them mercy-bread from heaven.
I look hard for the answers to the prayers that I didn’t pray. I look for the mercy-bread that He promised to bake fresh for me each morning. The Israelites called it manna, which means “what is it?”
That’s the same question I’m asking—again, and again. There’s mercy here somewhere—but what is it? What is it? What is it?
I see mercy in the dusty sunlight that outlines the trees, in my mother’s crooked hands, in the blanket my friend left for me, in the harmony of the wind chimes. It’s not the mercy that I asked for, but it is mercy nonetheless. And I learn a new prayer: thank you. It’s a prayer I don’t mean yet, but will repeat until I do.
Call me cursed, call me lost, call me scorned. But that’s not all. Call me chosen, blessed, sought-after. Call me the one who God whispers his secrets to. I am the one whose belly is filled with loaves of mercy that were hidden for me.
Even on days when I’m not so sick, sometimes I go lay on the mat in the afternoon light to listen for Him. I know it sounds crazy, and I can’t really explain it, but God is in there—even now. I have heard it said that some people can’t see God because they won’t look low enough, and it’s true. Look lower. God is on the bathroom floor.”
You can't wait until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy.

When I was a young man and my life was a wreck, anything would set me off. The more hopeless and empty I felt, the more my fury boiled over.

One night, the owners of my bar came in to tell me they'd be raising the rent. By the time that fight was over, the place was surrounded by police cars and ambulances.

Without God to temper our rage, the anger becomes more important than the things we claim to be angry about.

Rage becomes the god of the godless.

Lashing out at others might dull the pain of our broken relationship with God for a moment, but it can't correct wrongs, and it won't solve our problem. Sin can never be paid for by canceling others; only Christ’s blood can do that.

Unbridled anger steals our joy and robs us of hope. When we feed it little pieces of our hearts and minds, we lose our identity, and our identity becomes our rage.

The more our culture slithers away from God, the more people hopped up on anger and outrage will try to cancel their shame by projecting guilt on others.

But never lose sight of this: These people really don't know God and how much he longs for them. Jesus understood this through and through. Remember how he prayed for the ones who drove nails through his hands and feet? “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)

I wrote "Uncanceled" to offer an alternative to the anger and chaos that are beginning to define who we are. I hope you'll read it, pass it along, and help bring meaning, peace, and the knowledge of God to all those who need it so desperately. Get it anywhere you buy books, or get one of the limited number of signed copies at premierecollectibles.com/uncanceled.

Dear God, our hearts are broken to see the horrific situation in Afghanistan today. So many dead. So many injured. So many afraid of being killed. Lord, we pray for a miracle that these people who are desperate to survive will be rescued. That our Americans will lifted out, that our friends there who helped our troops maintain peace will be saved. We pray also for the families of our 13 murdered military soldiers who were there helping people, and being so kind to the children. Only You can ever fill that terrible feeling of loss that their families are feeling now. Comfort them. Help them feel our prayers, love, and appreciation for all that their adult child has done to protect our freedom.
They have made the ultimate sacrifice and we pray they are rewarded by the peace of Your presence now and forever. In Jesus name I pray.
