"Remember That the Holidays Can Be Painful" - by Rev. Weldon Bares

We need to remember that the holiday season can be a time of pain for people. It's not all beautiful Christmas trees and smiling children sitting around opening gifts.

For some, Christmas means sadness. Sadness because a loved one is no longer present to share in the joy of the season. Sadness because there is an estrangement in the family. Sadness because of illness.

We need to recognize that Christmas is a time of pain for some. Pain because their children will not receive a gift or a nice meal.

For some, Christmas is a time of loneliness. While families gather to share in the joy of the season, some are alone.

I have read statements from psychologists who claim that more people suffer from depression during the holiday season than at any other time of the year.

If the Christmas season is an unhappy time for you, allow me to say the following: Jesus of Nazareth knows what it means to be sad. He knows what it means to be lonely. He knows what it means to lose a loved one in death. He knows what it means to be deprived (he was born in a stable!) He knows everything that we are going through because he has been there.

Let me encourage you to ask the Prince of Peace to be a part of your life this Christmas season. Ask him to give you peace and joy. He can turn things around. He can really make a difference.

Romans 13: 11-14
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Copied from a friend
"Pity Party?" - by Rev. Weldon Bares

Pity parties are not fun. There is no music. No laughter. We are sometimes the host of parties like that in our lives. They are never joyous events.

Helen Keller’s life had much darkness and silence, but she once said, “Self-pity is our worst enemy, and if we yield to it, we can never do anything wise in this world.”

Consider someone else who had every reason to throw a pity party. He had little education and little money. He had no children. In fact, he never married.

His brothers and sisters rejected him. People lied about him. He was falsely accused, arrested and executed for something he did not do.

Who is this man? A rabbi from ancient Palestine, Jesus of Nazareth. He had quite a few reasons to throw a major pity-party. But he didn't. Instead, he said, "I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you." (John 15:11)

I just believe that somehow the holy presence of God can make a big difference in our lives. The psalmist affirmed, “In your presence there is fullness of joy.” (Psalm 16:11)

The next time that we are tempted to throw a pity party, let's invite a special guest. Let's invite Jesus Christ. He sure makes a difference. Maybe he will even turn water into wine for us.

Have a blessed day!
Deeann Johnson
