From Jonah, we learn that disobedience does not cancel God’s will for you. When God originally told Jonah to go to Nineveh, he ran from God and ended up in the belly of a giant fish. God delivered him from that experience and again told Jonah to go to Nineveh. You see, disobedience does not cancel God’s will. God still wanted Jonah to go to Nineveh. *** Now consider your life. What does God want you to do, that you don’t want to do? Or what does God want you to stop doing that you don’t want to give up? Or where does God want you to go that you don’t want to go? Do you think that by avoiding God, or putting off doing His will, or running from Him is going to change what He wants you to do? No, it won’t! If God wants you to do something, you better figure out what you need to do to get it done!

After Jonah prayed from the belly of the whale, he was spewed out on dry land. The next verse says, “Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time….” Please note the words “a second time”. God gave Jonah a second opportunity to obey Him. Sometimes God gives second chances! He did so with Jonah, with the Prodigal Son, with Peter, and with others. Probably most of us have had second chances. And apparently, a lot of people count on God offering them a second chance. They keep putting off what they know God wants them to do. But please hear a word of caution. God does not always give second chances. Jesus said in Luke 17:32, “Remember Lot’s wife!” She disobeyed God and turned into a pillar of salt. No second chance for her! You see, God has mercy on whom He chooses to have mercy. And He will give a second chance to whom He chooses. But it is always God’s choice. He may give you a second chance, but don’t count on it. It would be better to just obey God in the first place!

It is interesting, that when Jonah prayed from the belly of the great fish, he never asked God to save him from the fish. Actually, he thanked God for sending the fish to save him! Even in the belly of the fish, Jonah realized that his situation could have been worse. *** Think about your prayer life. Do you spend most of your prayer time asking God for “things”, or asking Him to deliver you from a difficult situation? How much of your prayer time do you spend thanking God for what He has done in your life, and asking Him to use the situation you are in to grow and strengthen your faith? We all need to get out of the habit of saying “gimme” prayers, and begin saying more “thank you” prayers!

When Jonah ended up in the belly of the giant fish, it seemed to be a helpless situation, but he was never hopeless! In his prayer to God, Jonah expressed confidence that God would deliver him. *** When you are in one of those difficult situations that we sometimes face in life, and you cry out to God for help, you never know how God is going to respond. He may use the knowledge of the Doctors, or a medication or a procedure. He may send someone to help you or to give you a word of encouragement. Or maybe the Holy Spirit will come close to guide you and sustain you. So don’t give up hope! God knows where you are. God knows what you are going through. God knows what you need. Keep crying out to Him! And don’t give up hope!

When you find yourself in one of those difficult “belly of the whale” experiences, do what Jonah did and cry out to the Lord. And just as He did for Jonah, God will hear your prayer! You should never underestimate the power of prayer. A children’s Sunday School teacher asked her class what each one would do if they were swallowed by a big fish like Jonah. As you can imagine, there were some rather humorous responses. Then one little girl said, “I’d call my Daddy and wait till he got me out.” And that’s exactly what Jonah did! He cried out to God and then waited. And God responded. Sometimes only God can give us the help we need with the problems we face. You may have to wait longer than three days, but don’t give up! Cry out to the Lord, and you can be sure that He will hear you. And He will answer you!

When Jonah was running from God, he got on a boat headed for Tarshish. He had no idea that he was going to end up in the belly of a giant fish! +++ As we go through “real life”, we sometimes face situations and go through circumstances that are serious and difficult to deal with. ** Issues with our health. ** Marriages that are hanging on by a thread, or those in which the thread has already broken. ** Children that are on the wrong course in life. ** The loss of a job, or difficult problems at work. We could add many more things to this list. Whatever difficult situation you are in represents the “belly” of the great fish. What should you do when you find yourself in the “belly of the whale”? Do what Jonah did. He began to cry out to God!

In the Bible story of Jonah and the big fish (whale), God asked Jonah to preach to the wicked city of Nineveh. Jonah didn’t want to do that, so he ran from God. He boarded a ship sailing in the opposite direction from Nineveh. The ship ran into a violent storm and Jonah was thrown overboard. The last verse of chapter one tells us, “And the Lord sent a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And he was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” Jonah 2:1 then says, “Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.” First Jonah ran FROM God, then he ran TO God! *** When God has something for you to do, don’t run FROM Him. Run TO Him! That’s always the better choice!
