When King Nebuchadnezzar ruled over Babylon, he had a massive idol built and ordered everyone in the kingdom to bow down and worship it. Anyone who failed to do so was subject to death. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were Hebrew slaves in Babylon at the time. But there was no question in their minds where their loyalty was. Even though they understood the deadly consequences of their choice, they knew they could not bow to the idol because the first commandment said they could have no other gods before their God, Jehovah. So, they knew where they stood. And they refused to bow down to the idol. Do you know where you stand concerning God’s Word?

“Greater Love” means being willing to lay down your life for others. That spirit is illustrated in this story from the Civil War. Mr. Blake was drafted, but his wife had died and left him with several small children to raise. He knew no one who could take care of his children. His young neighbor, Charles Durham, offered to enter the army in his place. In his first battle, Charles was shot and killed. Mr. Blake was devastated. He retrieved Charles’s body and buried him in the Church cemetery. Then he carved out a marker for the grave. It simply said, “Charles Durham: He died in my place”. That’s what our soldiers do for us. That’s what Christ did as well.

We find the challenge to Greater Love in John 15:12 when Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.” Did you catch the significance of that verse? Jesus is calling us to a higher level of love than simple emotions or feelings. He tells us to love others like He loved us. And He loved us enough to die for us. So to love someone like Jesus loved us would require a love so great that it would lead us to lay down our own lives as a demonstration of that love. That’s what Jesus meant when He commanded us to “love one another, as I have loved you.” On Memorial Day, we honor those soldiers who laid down their lives for us.

Romans 5:8 states clearly what “Greater Love” is. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The original cost of “Greater Love” was the life of Jesus! His love for us was the “Greater Love”. He suffered. He diedon the cross. And Romans 5:8 states what is even more astounding; the fact that Jesus died for sinners! He died for us! That was the ultimate expression of love! Jesus paid the cost of “Greater Love” with His life.

Jesus tells us in John 15:13 what “greater love” is. “Greater love has no one than this, that a man would lay down his life for his friends.” As Jesus described it, greater love has a cost associated with it. The cost is your own life. Dr. Albert Barnes said this about greater love. “No higher expression of love could be given, than to give up your life out of love. Life is the most precious thing we possess; and when a man is willing to lay down his life for his friends or for his country, it shows the utmost extent of love.” All those who enter the military know that they may have to show “greater love”, and some actually do.

Memorial Day is a day to specifically honor those who paid for our freedom with their lives; those whose Moms never saw them again, those whose Dads wept in private, those whose Wives raised Kids alone and those whose Kids only remember them from pictures. Those are the ones this day is all about. This isn’t just a day off from work. This is a day to remember; to remember that others paid for every free breath that we get to breathe. They paid the cost of our Freedom! And actually, though we have this day set aside to honor our war dead once a year, their sacrifice should be acknowledged every single day!
