An amillennial or postmillenial theologian claimed Ezekiel 38 and 39 are the same event but this is false.
In Ezekiel 39, the battle is before the millennial kingdom is ushered in. In Ezekiel 38, the battle is at the end of the millenial kingdom when Satan is released. Understanding these two chapters as two seperate events can be seen in the fact that the people are brought in to live securely in the land (before Millenial) in Ezekiel 39.
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. They will forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid.

While in Ezekiel 38, the people are attacked WHILE they have been live securely in the land. This attack is motivated by satan into the minds of Gog and Magog
‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan, and you will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, to capture spoil and to seize plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places which are now inhabited, and against the people who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who live at the center of the world.’

When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.
