"I was mowing the lawn one fall afternoon, my mind racing as fast as the whirring blades. A month or so prior, I’d left my job and was in the process of looking for work. Bank accounts were running low, and the pantry grew emptier by the day—despite the countless résumés I’d sent. I was, in a word, stressed.

As I pushed the mower under a walnut tree, through a pile of nuts so dense it felt like mowing in a ball pit, I had the semi-consoling thought that if things didn’t turn around soon, at least we wouldn’t starve. It was as if one of those walnuts had smacked me in the head and reminded me of a truth I’d forgotten.

Jesus tells us we can’t serve money and God (Matt. 6:24). Paul tells us the love of money is the root of “all sorts of evil” (1 Tim. 6:10). And James warns the church against favoring someone just because he or she is wealthy (James 2:2-4). As I was slogging through that pile of freshly fallen walnuts, I realized that money is like a cloud—seemingly solid but ultimately unable to support me.

I was so focused on one facet of God’s provision that I wasn’t seeing the much larger reality that He provides in superabundant ways. I was literally walking all over it. God offers a life that is secure in any economic circumstance. Maybe it’s not always easy to rely on God for our daily bread, but doing so will always lead to something good and abundant and filled with hope.

Pray Without Ceasing: Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)

In order to find freedom, wholeness, and true success in life, we must become more like the Lord. And that means spending time in His presence by making praise and worship a way of life.

Lord, I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise (Psalm 100:4). I worship You as the almighty, all-powerful God of heaven and earth, and the Creator of all things. I praise You as my Heavenly Father, who is with me every day to guide and protect me. Thank You for all You have given me and all You will provide for me in the future. “You guard all that is mine. The land You have given me is a pleasant land” (Psalm 16:5-6 NLT).

I praise You for Your love that liberates me and makes me whole. Pour Your love into me so that it overflows to others and glorifies You in the process. Thank You for Your greatest act of love—sending Your Son to die for me. I praise You, Jesus, my Lord and Redeemer, that You have saved me and given me a foundation that is unshakable. “You enlarged my path under me, so my feet did not slip” (2 Samuel 22:37). It is my greatest privilege to exalt You above all and proclaim that You are King of kings and Lord of lords. No one is greater than You.

In Jesus’ name I pray.
