Jesus didn’t mince words. When He called disciples to “Come, follow,” He meant with everything they had. This lesson takes what we’ve learned this month and shows just how expansive and intense discipleship truly is when we follow Jesus. This rabbi would call his followers to give up careers, family, and even their very lives in service to Him. We want to impress upon the students this week that the world’s offerings pale in comparison to following Jesus. If He asks us to leave it all behind, we should drop everything and follow Him. We are excited to wrap up this month’s lessons with such a powerful and intentional truth on what it means to be a follower.

Jesus is a master at metaphor and engaging what people know to send them out to do His work. This is exactly what happens in our story today. When Jesus called His disciples, He didn’t forget their lines of work when He asked them to join His mission. In fact, He utilized those skills for the good of the ministry. Peter and Andrew knew all about catching fish by casting nets. And Jesus took that profession and turned it into a mission that would change the world! It also makes a great metaphor for our calling to do the same. We are all fishermen now. We want to relay this Great Commission to your students this Sunday.

The idea that we can see God is pretty mind-blowing. This week’s lesson goes through this concept and how the disciples had to grapple with it. Jesus used His power to prove to Nathanael that He is God. And He told Him that he would enjoy a similar experience to their patriarch Jacob who got to see God while angels ascended and descended. Even with reassuring statements and powerful abilities, some of them still struggled to get it. God didn’t just send Jesus. They were One. The Bible is pretty clear about that. We hope to help the students harmonize the humanity of Jesus with still being God. We pray that they will not struggle as much as the earliest disciples did and that their faith will be strengthened.

God’s plan is always going off without a hitch. And that includes the life and ministry of John the Baptist. This wild-man preacher was quite the sight, but he carried a message that softened people’s hearts to receive the good news of Jesus. This week we’ll share about how he went around with his own disciples to share his message but gladly parted with them so that they could follow Jesus. We want students to know that this is the mission. Our job is to point others to Jesus. And we should use whatever influence we have to do it just like John did. He didn’t consider his own reputation or fame; he wanted people to look to the Lamb of God instead of him. We’re pumped to bring this message to your students this week!
