Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely - be content with your pay."
Luke 3:14

The message here isn't just "don't extort" and "be content with your pay. The soldiers lived in a culture where people in authority were expected to take bribes, kickbacks, and to extort more than they were due. In any relationship with a power imbalance, these same temptations can still arise. Jesus calls those in power to treat everyone fairly and be content with an honest living.
