Sheen was born on May 8, 1895. His birth name was Peter John, but he eventually took the name Fulton, his mother's maiden name.

Today, the Church commemorates John's death at the hands of King Herod. John's death foreshadows Jesus' death in some key ways. He is killed by a ruler who hesitates in executing him (Herod = Pilate), he is killed for speaking the hard truths to the people, and his disciples take his body away afterward. Whether John knew all the details or not, he had faith that he had spoken the truth to power. Saint John the Baptist, grant us your courage today.

It’s an important question. Jesus first asks who the crowds say he is. Then he turns to the disciples. Simon Peter - through the inspiration of the heavenly Father - identifies Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” He is the divine Son of God. Who is Jesus to you?
⁣
Jesus then sets Peter as the foundation of the Church and to him Jesus gives the “keys of the kingdom of heaven.” How might God be calling you to help establish the Kingdom of Heaven today?
⁣
Ask for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to guide you today.
