We are all familiar with this famous passage, but it's the details that matter! Like Peter, we can become beset by the storms of life and lose hope. In these cases, God NEVER abandons us. The moment Peter begins to sink, the Lord has him in his arms. It's a potent reminder that there is never a moment when the Lord is absent; Jesus is always with us and longs to rush to our aid. All together, let the whole MQM community be willing to say, "Lord, save me!"

According to ancient legend, Mary appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius in the late 300s, telling him that she would send a summer snowfall to a spot where she wanted a church built. That church is the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Snow is a sign of Mary's purity and of the Church's power to forgive our sins. From Psalm 51, we read, "Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."

In today's Gospel, we are reminded that grace builds on nature. The disciples only have a little food - but they have something! - to share. And instead of destroying it or choosing alternatives, Jesus "builds on" their small gift with the miraculous multiplication.

This month, the Holy Father asks, "Let us pray that in large cities often marked by anonymity and loneliness we find new ways to proclaim the Gospel, discovering creative paths to build community." Through the intercession of Sts. Peter and Paul, who evangelized Rome, may all of us at Mary, Queen of Martyrs Parish have the strength to build true Christian community!
