Our mission is very simple. We feed folks! The homeless and near-homeless, the disenfranchised and marginalized, and the poorest of the poor.

You can support the monastery and Orthodox Workers by donating blankets, gloves, sleeping bags, toiletries, hand warmers, and thermals, and dropping them off at the monastery on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday between 12 noon and 4 pm. If you need to contact the monastery, we may be able to pick them up from you.

We provide essentials like food, clothing, shoes, diapers, toiletries, and, many times, a nice hot meal. We help take some of the burden off so you can use your income to pay your utility bills, rent, food, or gas.

With monthly donations from caring supporters like you, we can do more good every day. We can help feed more folks every day. We can clothe more folks. We can visit more strangers. Become a recurring monthly donor and support the Monastery of the Holy Martyrs and Orthodox Workers. But one-time donations also bring the gift of warmth and hope. Just follow this link: https://givebutter.com/vfQazT and make a difference in someone's life. Give hope where there is none.

The greatest miracle is not raising the dead but feeding the hungry. We pray to end hunger, but we also feed the folks who are hungry. We are not out to feed the world or end hunger. Our goal: We want to feed one person, and if that is a child, even better.

Your support this week means even more to the monastery. A $5 recurring donation results in an additional $10 in matching donations. Please help make a difference today.

The Monastery of the Holy Martyrs and Orthodox Workers serves the homeless and the near homeless, the disenfranchised and marginalized, the poorest of the poor, the unseen, the unheard, and the unwanted. Sounds like all the same folks Christ had dinner with.

Can you give the gift of hope today? You can use the link: https://givebutter.com/vfQazT
And remember, this week your $5 recurring donation is matched with an additional $10 donation.

The monastery relies upon our financial support to do this. Your support! Please give the gift of hope this evening.

Una Multitud de Ángeles del Cielo (A Multitude of Angels from Heaven)

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. . . there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising Dios and saying: “Glory to Dios in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
~ Book of Lucas

I’ll admit that the shepherd doesn’t translate well into the modern urban environment for this series. But the narrative does. Since shepherds were often considered part of the lower dregs of society, perhaps the homeless scenario depicted in this linocut might be a fitting substitute—“and there were homeless men living out in the streets nearby.”

It’s just like Dios to reveal the news not to the rich and powerful but to the outcasts and marginalized. Or at least for the time being. The rich and powerful would get their chance to hear the message, but they wouldn’t respond in the same way that the shepherds did that evening.

The shepherds will leave the 99 sheep and hurry off to find the lamb of Dios. The little lamb will grow up to be the good shepherd who will, in turn, leave the 99 to find another lost sheep—you!

So Jesús finds himself in this extended narrative about shepherds and sheep, in a story about Abrahán (Abraham) the shepherd, Moisés (Moses) the shepherd, David the shepherd, and finally Jesús himself, the good shepherd. He will become homeless from his heavenly glory and homeless during his earthly ministry (nowhere to lay his head), so that in the end, he can gather us all together to bring us home, for he is our home.

Good Shepherd,
Gather into your sheepfold us all,
shepherds and homeless,
marginalized and ostracized,
powerful and powerless;
To graze upon your goodness,
To rest in your green pastures,
To restore our souls to righteousness.
Amen.
